Your Google Pixel is getting a vital free software update this month

Google owns and makes Android, so you might expect its Pixel smartphones to be free of bugs. If only that was the case! Just like any smartphone in 2025, Google’s handsets can suffer from performance, screen and battery issues just like any other Android phone or iPhone.

The firm knows this and regularly rolls out software updates to Pixels to fix problems, and that’s exactly what is happening this month.

Posting on a support page, Google Community Manager Siri Tejaswini confirmed a new Google Pixel software update for October 2025 is now rolling out to Pixel 7 and later devices.

“All supported Pixel devices running Android 16 will receive these software updates starting today, and the rollout will continue over the next week in phases, depending on carrier and device,” they said. “You will receive a notification once the system update is available for your device.”

In a post on X, Google said the update “will continue over the next few weeks”, so if it’s not waiting for you to download on your phone yet you might have to wait.

Pixel phones have a slight reputation for being buggy, though that’s more the earlier models such as the Pixel 3 and Pixel 4, which came out in 2018 and 2019 respectively, and no longer receive software updates.

The free update contains bug fixes and improvements for your phone, and Google went as far as to detail the specific problems it is addressing. Here are the full details of what the update fixes, according to Google:

Display & Graphics

  • Fix for screen flickering and sudden shutdown issues under certain conditions
  • Fix for issue occasionally causing frozen or fuzzy display under certain conditions

System

  • Fix for issue occasionally causing system instability under certain conditions

User Interface

  • Fix for an issue where a semi-transparent background would persist after the camera was launched under certain conditions
  • Fix for issue where the flashlight status does not appear on the At a Glance widget in certain conditions
  • Fix for System UI crash when starting or stopping casting with the Media Output Switcher in certain conditions

Not all these issues apply to all phones, but the update is for the Pixel 7 series, Pixel 8 series, Pixel 9 series, Pixel 10 series and the Pixel tablet that launched in 2023.

The Pixel 7 series that came out in 2022 is still supported, with these fixes. According to Google, it still offers software updates for the Pixel 6 from 2021, but at this stage these are only security patches and not feature updates.

Since the Pixel 8 in 2024, Google promises those and newer Pixel phones seven years of Android updates, an industry-best length of support alongside some Samsung and Honor devices.
