An “exceptional” period drama that fans can’t believe isn’t watched more is streaming for free in the UK. The Confessions of Frannie Langton is a four-part drama set against the “dazzling opulence of Georgian London”, narrating the journey of Frannie (Karla-Simone Spence) from a Jamaican plantation to “the grand Mayfair mansion of celebrated scientist George Benham and his exquisitely beautiful wife, Madame Marguerite Benham” according to the ITV synopsis.
George and Marguerite Benham are played by Stephen Campbell Moore and Sophie Cookson, respectively. But disaster strikes when the Benhams are found murdered with Frannie lying next to Marguerite, with whom she has formed a close bond. Frannie, who grew up in slavery before being forcibly taken to England to work as a maid, and is subjected to racism, cruelty and suspicion, is accused of murder and dragged to prison but swears her innocence. The series is based on Sara Collins’ 2019 novel of the same name, which won a Costa Book Award, and was adapted for the screen by Collins herself.
Fans have flocked to IMDb to shower the series with praise. with one writing: “It boggles my mind how this beautiful series is still woefully under-watched.”
“I mean, considering how entertaining it is and the strong positive social commentaries that it makes coupled with its decent visual appeal, one cannot help but wonder how so many people seem to not yet have watched it,” they added.
Another said: “An intriguing drama, with two principle elements, it’s both a love story and a murder mystery. The love story is perhaps the principal interest, a love between two women in the late nineteenth century, it’s powerful and heartbreaking.
“The mystery is also so engaging, I’m sure you’ll form several different theories as it develops. Powerful, moving and thought provoking, it’s a great drama.”
They called on viewers to read the book, which is “somewhat different to this drama adaptation, very much worth your time”.
The IMDb user added that Spence does a “terrific job as Frannie, as does Sophie Cooking, their love story is impeccably played out”. The supporting cast of Jodhi May and Pooky Quesnel are excellent.
“It’s a stunning production, it looks amazing, the sets and costumes are incredible, some of the most amazing wigs you’ll ever see,” calling it “exceptional”.
A third said: Absolutely brilliant mini series keeps you interested & thinking! I really enjoyed it & it had me gripped to it intriguing watch & storyline!
“I may even watch it again soon I liked it that much. However I didn’t expect the end really quite shocked by it when it all came out.”
The episodes have 12 and 15 certificate, with the series containing strong violence, racism, and drug misuse – so viewer discretion is advised.
