Virgin Atlantic launches ‘new’ route to beautiful city after 6 years | Travel News | Travel
Holidaymakers will once again be able to fly direct from London to Mexico’s Caribbean coast, as Virgin Atlantic relaunches its popular route to Cancún for the first time in six years. The service officially resumed on Sunday (October 19), marking the airline’s long-awaited return to one of its most sought-after winter sun destinations.
It’s now the only direct connection between London Heathrow and Cancún, giving travellers easy access to Mexico’s turquoise beaches, resorts and cultural landmarks. The route is being operated by Virgin Atlantic’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, offering passengers the familiar onboard comforts the airline is known for, from spacious seating and in-flight entertainment to signature dining and cocktails. A Virgin Atlantic spokesperson said the return of the Cancún route comes at the perfect time for travellers looking to escape Britain’s grey skies for a dose of Caribbean warmth.
With Mexico’s Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) celebrations taking place in early November, the timing also allows visitors to experience one of the country’s most colourful cultural events.
Cancún is one of the most visited destinations in Latin America, thanks to its mix of pristine beaches, ancient ruins and lively nightlife. Located along the Riviera Maya, it’s a gateway to Mayan archaeological sites like Chichén Itzá and Tulum, as well as the natural freshwater cenotes scattered through the Yucatán Peninsula.
The revived service also caters to those simply looking for a luxury break in the sun. Virgin Atlantic Holidays is offering several flight-and-hotel packages, including seven nights at Oleo Cancún Playa from £1,184 per person on an all-inclusive basis, departing in March 2026, or a week at The Fives Downtown Hotel & Residences in December from £1,057 per person, including breakfast.
Other options include the Essence at The Fives Beach, from £1,867 per person, with £415 in resort credit per room, and the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya – Hacienda, from £1,710 per person for a Deluxe Gold Room. All packages include direct Virgin Atlantic Economy Classic flights from London Heathrow and are ABTA and ATOL protected.
The move comes as Virgin Atlantic strengthens its network of long-haul leisure routes, adding demand-driven destinations for the colder months. The airline currently flies to a range of tropical favourites, including Barbados, Antigua, Jamaica and the Maldives.
While Virgin Atlantic’s Cancún flights will be the only direct service from London to Mexico’s Caribbean coast, UK travellers also have regular options to reach Mexico City, the country’s capital and cultural hub.
Both Aeroméxico and British Airways operate direct flights from London Heathrow to Mexico City International Airport (MEX), running roughly 10 to 13 flights per week between them.
