UK holidaymakers save Majorca’s tourism industry as others abandon the island | Travel News | Travel

UK holidaymakers have saved the summer season across the Balearic Islands as tourist spending has not been the best this year.

Majorca, along with other islands across the Balearics, have seen a fall in the number of tourists visiting the destination as a result of many things, including increased prices, anti-tourism campaigns, and tourism bans. Although Brits have also been among the many groups of holidaymakers that have been seeking alternative destinations, it appears that the Brits who have continued jetting over to Majorca have saved their peak tourism season, while visitors from across the seas have abandoned the island.

In recent years, Majorca has seen a growth in tourism from the United States. New direct flights from New York also helped boost the number of visitors from the U.S travelling to the island.

However this year, Majorca saw a drop in the amount of Americans visiting the sunny island, and according to one major department store it has been UK holidaymakers that have helped to fill the gap left by American tourists, as Brits went back to being one of their top spenders, Majorca Daily Bulletin reports.

Last year, the U.S market was Majorca’s second best foreign one, but this year it has been replaced by the British market. It is believed that the situation in the Middle East is to blame for fall in American tourists this summer.

Some five star hotels across Majorca have said that the U.S played a crucial role in their businesses.

The German market remains in the number one position when it comes to tourists visiting Majorca, but it has been reported that the number of Germans visiting has also fallen, precisely by around 8% — causing a major concern in the local area.

With reports of a drop in both U.S and German tourism, it appears that Brits have remained loyal to island and other Balearic destinations. While there has been a fall in Brits visiting Majorca this year, it is not as bad as what was expected by officials.

The number of visitors fell by around 2% in July, while Ibiza and Menorca saw significant increases this summer.
