As the October half term looms, with many Britons planning to jet off for a well-deserved break, travel experts have issued a stark warning about luggage tags. The UK’s October half-term typically runs from Monday, October 27 to Friday, October 31, and it’s a popular time for families to escape due to the pleasant weather and more affordable prices compared to the summer season.

However, experts at 1st Move International Removals highlighted the crucial details you should never include when labelling your bags, as it could leave you open to identity theft, scams and even burglary. Mike Harvey, Managing Director at 1st Move International, warned: “When filling out luggage tags, it’s vital to strike a balance between making your bag easy to identify and keeping your personal details safe.

“Sharing too much information could expose you to identity theft, financial fraud, burglary, and other risks.”

The managing director has shared a guide on what you should include and avoid when labelling your luggage, reports the LiverpoolEcho.

You should write your full name as it appears on your passport, to help the airline reunite you with your lost luggage. A phone number should also be provided so you have a method of being contacted an email address as another method of being contacted if your luggage is misplaced, stolen or lost.

There are several details that should be avoided when you are filling out luggage tags. These include:

• Home address: This could alert thieves that your property is empty while you’re away

• Valuables: Don’t mention items inside your bag to avoid attracting attention

• Travel plans and destinations: Keep your itinerary private to prevent misuse

It’s worth giving some thought to the locks you use on your suitcases and bags. A locked suitcase can act as a deterrent to thieves, and while determined criminals may still find ways to break in, an unsecured bag is more likely to be targeted.

This extra layer of security significantly cuts down the risk of items being nicked from your luggage during transit or handling. Booking.com advised: “Locking your checked luggage also ensures your personal belongings remain private.

“Your suitcase contains personal items and you don’t want others to see or access them. A locked bag prevents casual snooping and maintains the confidentiality of your possessions.”
