With the festive season fast approaching, we’ll soon be seeing Christmas markets popping up all across the country. From the ever-popular Winter Wonderland in London, to smaller Christmas fairs, there’s certainly something for everyone – and sometimes it’s the underrated options that prove the most memorable.

Neil Atkinson, owner of Luxury Group Stay has revealed his top picks of lesser-known Christmas markets offering authentic festive cheer without the shoulder-to-shoulder crowds of Manchester, Birmingham or Edinburgh. He said: “Some of the best Christmas events are tucked away in smaller spa towns and cathedral cities. They’re often more personal, better value, and filled with genuine local craftsmanship rather than mass-produced souvenirs.”

Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market – Hampshire

Singing the praises of Winchester Cathedral’s Christmas market, Neil says: “Set in the shadow of the magnificent Winchester Cathedral, this market has become a southern secret for those who want European-style charm without leaving the UK.”

From November 21 to December 22, Winchester’s market offers visitors the chance to purchase handmade gifts, artisanal food, and luxury crafts, all under twinkling lights that transform the Cathedral Close into a festive postcard.

And with the cathedral choir putting on numerous performances during this period it truly is just pure Christmas magic.

Worcester Victorian Christmas Fayre – Worcestershire

From December 4 to 7, Worcester steps back in time, and the streets are filled with Victorian-costumed traders, a traditional carousel and the smell of roasted chestnuts, for the Victorian Christmas Fayre.

Visitors can expect to find local producers selling crafts, street food and festive drinks while carol singers and buskers keep the atmosphere buzzing. 

Durham Christmas Festival – County Durham

Neil said: “Few settings are as striking as Durham Cathedral at Christmas.” He recommended the Durham Christmas Festival, which takes place for just three days, from December 5 to 7.

This short festival includes a Craft & Producers’ Marquee on Palace Green, a bustling outdoor market and a Children’s Lantern Parade winding up to the cathedral.

Canterbury Christmas Market – Kent

From November 12 to December 24, Canterbury brings cathedral-city sparkle with one of the South East’s most picturesque markets.

Visitors can expect 170+ stalls offering handmade gifts, candles, crafts and festive foods line the streets beneath the glow of the city’s ancient cathedral.

The Canterbury Christmas market strikes a perfect balance between atmosphere and size, featuring strong local craftsmanship and plenty of family-friendly activities.

Harrogate Christmas Fayre – North Yorkshire

The Harrogate Christmas Fayre, which takes place from December 5 to 14, is ideal for those who prefer a slower pace when enjoying the festivities.

With around 40 decorated chalets throughout the spa town, the Harrogate Christmas Fayre is a compact, stylish and effortlessly festive choice.

Neil added: “It is beautifully curated, easy to explore, and perfect for a festive weekend with a touch of class. Expect artisanal gifts, gourmet treats, and mulled wine breaks between boutique shops and cosy tearooms.”
