This sub-£40 Bluetooth speaker is my stocking stuffer recommendation
The holiday season is fast approaching, which for many of us means a great deal of deliberation over Christmas gift purchases. If the person you’re buying for is into the latest tech, things can get pretty expensive pretty quickly.
Should you be a little stuck on what to get that special someone, I’ve seen an excellent deal on one of my favourite gadgets that is now more affordable than ever.
Right now over on Amazon you can get the Ultimate Ears Miniroll Bluetooth speaker for the bargain price of £37.99, a huge 46 percent discount on its £69.99 RRP. I’ve tested the Miniroll longterm, and despite its odd name it’s now my go-to speaker for casual use.
It’s Ultimate Ears’s cheapest speaker even when full price, so to get it for less than £40 is an excellent price. Despite its diminutive size it packs a surprising audio punch, with good bass and volume that gets loud enough to vibrate the whole unit.
I don’t usually crank it up that loud, and this is not the speaker to get if you want true room-filling sound at the best quality. My use is mostly when I want to listen to music or podcasts when chilling or cooking and want something better than my phone’s speaker. Its portability means I can quickly grab it and move from room to room, hardly something I can do with the mains powered sound system in my living room.
It’s also one of the first items in my backpack when I go away for the weekend or hop on a plane on holiday (don’t worry, it’s for the destination, I don’t blast music on the plane).
The Miniroll even has a built-in rubberised clip so you can attach it to yourself or a bag, bike or other item to easily bring the tunes with you. Connected to your phone via Bluetooth, UE promises 40m of range, which is decent, plus the speaker is IP67 dust and water resistant so it could theoretically survive a rain shower or brief accidental dunk. The rubberised build means it’s also drop proof up to 1.2m
I’ve found the 12 hours of battery life claim to be accurate – you won’t have to charge it much, but when you do there’s an USB-C port.
And if you find one Miniroll isn’t enough, you can pair several of the things together using clever Auracast tech that’s built in, and create a sound system that’s party ready.
I’m not sure how long this low price will last, but Amazon has labelled it as a “Limited time deal” so you may want to pick one up now so that it arrives in time for Christmas, and it can be used straight away for a round of carol sing-a-longs.
