Britain has produced many detective films over the years, and some of them have become firm favourites with mystery fans. People often mention Sherlock Holmes stories when talking about the best in the genre. But there is one film in particular that viewers say stands out.

Some fans even call it “the best detective film ever made”. Others go further and describe it as “the best Sherlock Holmes film ever”. The movie also has a 95% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. It is based on one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous books set on the moors of Devon.

The original novel is widely regarded as one of Holmes’ greatest cases, and the film follows the same basic idea.

The movie in question is The Hound of the Baskervilles. Released in 1959, it is a British mystery film produced by Hammer Film Productions and directed by Terence Fisher. 

It stars Peter Cushing as Sherlock Holmes, Christopher Lee as Sir Henry Baskerville and André Morell as Doctor Watson. It was also the first time the story had been adapted in colour.

The plot centres around Holmes and Watson being asked to look into a death linked to a local legend. 

They travel to the Baskerville estate and begin investigating unusual events on the moor.

Fans have praised the movie for years. One person said: “It is not only the best detective film ever made but also the best Sherlock Holmes film ever.”

The original novel was first published in 1902 and remains one of the most famous detective stories ever written.

And those who have watched the film have been full of praise for the cast, which managed to bring the characters from the novel to life. 

Peter Cushing became famous for his detailed approach to playing Holmes, while Christopher Lee’s role as Sir Henry introduced many fans to him long before his career took off. 

André Morell’s portrayal of Watson is also remembered for being one of the closest to Conan Doyle’s original character.
