A charming Yorkshire city sits less than an hour from an extraordinary landmark that rivals the renowned Stonehenge. Druid’s Temple lies just 30 minutes from Ripon, with both destinations proving ideal for an autumn excursion before winter arrives.
Surrounding Druid’s Temple, visitors will discover woodland trails and cycling routes perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. The monument boasts nearly 200 years of history, situated close to the village of Ilton within the Yorkshire Dales National Park in North Yorkshire. Constructed during the 1800s, it provides guests with an exceptional combination of heritage and scenic splendour within a secluded forest environment.
A Tripadvisor reviewer wrote: “Could spend the better part of a day here and not be bored, especially in nice weather.
“Start by parking in the car park down at the tea rooms. Don some good footwear and walk back up through the car park, turn left up the slight hill and enter the woods. There is another car park there if you’re not planning for tea and cake after!”.
“Then hit the explore button! The ruins are great, all folly of course, but the kids (ages 4-11) all loved it.
“The surrounding woodland makes for a great adventure with scenic pictures to keep the photo minded very busy indeed! Lots of big rocks for climbing and the dogs loved it too.
“Head back for tea and cake and a beautiful little play park with a real working ye olde style hand pump for water play. They even have lots of stay overnight options which we intend to make use of next time!”
The neighbouring city of Ripon boasts a stunning cathedral, fascinating heritage and striking architecture – making it an excellent destination to explore in the region.
Stroll along Ripon canal, which is adored by both residents and visitors.
One visitor on Tripadvisor said: “We were staying in Ripon one showery weekend! It was so nice to dodge the showers for an hour, and have a walk down the canal side. So relaxing, and to see some canal boats going past us, made it even more rewarding.”
Lastly, visiting the cathedral is essential – it dates back to 672AD and stands as a beloved tourist hotspot in the city.
Its magnificent architecture and vibrant stained glass windows are guaranteed to impress.
