The Princess of Wales has quietly settled into a new uniform, and it’s one that’s becoming increasingly hard to ignore. Princess Catherine, 44, stepped out in grey once again this week, continuing a clear pattern that has been building over recent months.
On Wednesday afternoon, Prince William and Princess Catherine joined faith leaders at Canterbury Cathedral to see Dame Sarah Mullally be enthroned as the new Archbishop of Canterbury. For the occasion, Catherine chose a grey Prince of Wales check coat by Suzannah London, estimated at around £3,000.
It’s a shade that might seem understated at first glance, but in Catherine’s royal wardrobe right now, it feels anything but accidental.

While it may seem like a subtle shift, Princess Catherine’s repeated choice of grey is anything but accidental – and according to an expert, it carries a deeper meaning.
In an exclusive chat with The Daily Express, Karen Haller, Colour Psychology Practitioner, explains: “Grey might not be a colour people immediately associate with a future Queen, because we often expect senior royals to wear stronger, more visible colours.
“However, in colour psychology, grey sits in a space of neutrality, composure, and restraint, so it can be a very intentional choice.”
The expert suggests the focus deflects from Catherine and onto guests, the ceremony, and the institution itself.

This sits perfectly in line with her recent decision not to share details of her outfits, keeping the focus firmly on her work rather than what she’s wearing.
Ms Haller adds: “It suggests she is consciously taking a step back, showing support, and using colour to communicate that the moment belongs to someone else.”
“So rather than surprising, the choice makes sense. It suggests she is consciously taking a step back, showing support, and using colour to communicate that the moment belongs to someone else.”
When you look back at her recent appearances, that interpretation becomes increasingly clear.

Traditionally, bold colours have played a key role in royal dressing as it helps senior figures stand out and remain visible in large crowds. But Catherine’s recent choices suggest a shift away from that expectation.
Instead, she appears to be using colour more strategically, aligning her wardrobe with the tone and purpose of each engagement.
It’s this awareness that makes her current approach so compelling. Her wardrobe has always been elegant, but increasingly it feels intentional – each choice carefully calibrated to reflect her role in that moment.
