Schoolboy, 14, dies after being trapped under overturned tractor | UK | News
A schoolboy who loved working on farms and fixing trucks has tragically died in hospital after getting trapped under an overturned tractor. Aaron Anderson, 14, who was described as a “cheeky chappie” by his family, died in hospital on Boxing Day after the tragic incident that took place in Burnopfield, County Durham.
The 14-year-old was one of four passengers on a John Deere utility vehicle when it crashed and overturned on the evening of December 21. Aaron was rushed to the Royal Infirmary in Newcastle for treatment, but unfortunately passed away from his injuries just five days later. A 13-year-old year old boy also sustained serious injuries.
An inquest into Aaron’s death was opened on Thursday, January 29, at Crooks Coroners’ Court, reports Mail Online.
A post-mortem revealed that the young boy died of a brain injury and cardiac arrest after he was trapped under the tractor. The hearing was reportedly informed by coroner’s officer Alexis Blighe: “I understand the circumstances to be that Mr Anderson was a passenger on a Gator 4×4 agricultural vehicle on farm land.
“The vehicle had overturned, and Mr Anderson had been trapped underneath.”
The inquest was adjourned until April.
Aaron’s family paid tribute to the young boy, sharing that he was “he was a much-loved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend. He will be missed by all who knew him”.
They said: “Aaron was always happiest working on farms and fixing trucks. Even at the age of 14 he had an amazing work ethic and already had two apprenticeship offers.
“Although we are saddened about the life he will never have, we are so thankful for the life he has lived and will cherish all the happy memories he left us with.”
His family also shared that they “have had an overwhelming response from our friends, family, and the local community”.
They added: “We would also like to thank the ambulance service, police, and most importantly the amazing staff at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and charities who have provided us with so much comfort in this difficult time.
“Our thoughts and well wishes are also with everyone else affected by this tragic incident.
“We would now ask to be left in peace to grieve the loss of our son.”
