Samsung Galaxy phones get an iPhone-matching free upgrade – is yours on the list?

If one of the things stopping you from switching to Android from your iPhone is how much you use AirDrop, Samsung has just smashed through that barrier. The Korean tech giant has just announced it is bringing AirDrop support to the Galaxy S26 series, its latest high-end Android phones.

In a short press release, Samsung confirmed the update is rolling out as a software update to the Galaxy S26, Galaxy S26 Plus and Galaxy S26 Ultra from March 23, “starting in Korea and expanding to more regions including Europe, Hong Kong, Japan, Latin America, North America, Southeast Asia, and Taiwan.”

But if you have an older Galaxy phone, you will have to wait and see if AirDrop will ever make it to your device.

“AirDrop support will initially be available on the Galaxy S26 series, with expansion to additional devices to be announced at a later date,” Samsung said.

Samsung here is following quickly on from Google, who brought AirDrop to the Pixel 10 and later Pixel 9 phones in the past few months. The Android maker worked out how to get Android’s Quick Share function to play nice with AirDrop – crucially, without the need for a separate app.

It all works natively, and now Samsung phones will be able to send and receive files to and from Apple devices just as easily as you may be used to using an iPhone, iPad and Mac currently to do so.

When you get the update, you will be able to head to the Settings app to toggle on ‘Share with Apple devices’ in the Quick Share options.

AirDrop is a mighty useful Apple-made file transfer standard that lets you transfer files, photos and videos wirelessly between devices. It uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to create a mini bridge between two devices when they are close to each other, allowing for the secure and rapid sending of files.

If you have an iPhone, iPad and MacBook, it makes for an incredibly useful tool that is used in professional circles to send files quickly. It;s also a great way to share photos with family and friends.

But it has also served to lock users into the Apple ecosystem. Apple has long marketed AirDrop as a great reason to stick with Apple devices – meaning people are far less likely to upgrade their iPhone to an Android phone or switch from Mac to Windows.

Apple has a lot of ecosystem lock-in in this way, such as its refusal to allow Android phones to tap into iMessage and its blue text bubbles.

But Google worked out how to tap into AirDrop, and so far, Apple has not protested the move. With Samsung following Google’s lead and testing the waters, it might not be long until AirDrop compatibility becomes standard on Android phones. Not that it’ll necessarily convince Apple die hards to make the switch – but it’s good news if you’re already team Android.
