Period drama that’s ‘best movie on Netflix’ keeps fans glued | Films | Entertainment
Fans are encouraged to revisit Netflix’s ‘underrated’ period drama which features a star-studded cast with some of the biggest stars in early roles.
Originally launched on the streaming platform back in 2019, many regard The King as still one of its top productions.
While not necessarily a direct adaptation of one of Shakespeare’s works, it is influenced by several of his plays including Henry IV Part 1 and 2 along with Henry V. They are all in turn inspired by historical events.
According to its synopsis, a youthful Henry V encounters deceit, war and treachery after ascending to the throne of England in the 15th century, following his brother’s demise.
Heading the cast as a young Prince turned King, is Timothee Chalamet in one of his early roles. He would soon rise to become one of the most recognisable names and faces in Hollywood, starring in sci-fi blockbuster Dune, Wonka, and garner an Oscar nomination for Marty Supreme.
Joining him in a remarkable ensemble cast are Robert Pattinson as Louis, Duke of Guyenne, Joel Edgerton as Sir John Falstaff and Lily-Rose Depp as Catherine of Valois to name a few , reports the Mirror.
One person who shared their views of the film at the time of its release, seemed to predict Chalamet’s future success as they said: “This was epic. The acting was amazing. Near perfect writing. The actor who played Henry (Timothee C) should be a big star. Great presence. Take the time to watch this. I’m glad I did. High quality stuff.”
Years following its debut, admirers continue to lavish it with acclaim, with some questioning why it hasn’t received greater recognition. One enthusiast posted a review on the website Rotten Tomatoes, writing: “This movie is so underrated, and I’m not sure why it’s not talked about more, especially in regards to Chalamet’s performance.”
They went on: “I’ve seen it four times, and each time I enjoy it more and more. It’s so well designed and seamless. Every time I watch it, there are new things I notice and appreciate. I’m always especially in awe of the closing scenes.”
Another person contributed: “All I can say is that it had me glued to the screen from beginning to end, and the performance of the actors was incredible.”
While a third commented: “Cracking performances by the whole cast. Chalamet’s vocal work is particularly good, managing even the tricky feat of a convincing ‘rousing speech’ before battle. Pattinson is also epic as the crazy French prince. Great stuff.”
A further viewer proclaimed: “One of the best movies on Netflix. Maybe the best.” One concurred: “I absolutely love this movie. I could watch it over and over. It needs more recognition.”
One supporter confessed: “Fantastic movie that was well written with a great cast. Soundtrack also really made this movie. I”ve watched it several times now and it will be one of those yearly movies that i will come back to.””
And another person offered their assessment, stating: “This sets the example for what modern film should be. Everything is perfect.”
The King is streaming on Netflix.
