A ‘captivating’ action film from the early 2000s, which fans believe is clearly influenced by Die Hard, is now available for streaming on Prime Video.

Recently added to the streaming giant’s catalogue, the film SWAT can now be accessed by subscribers. Originally launched in 2003, it is actually based on a television series of the same name from the 1970s.

Like the TV programme, the film centres around a police Special Weapons and Tactics (known as SWAT) team operating in Los Angeles.

The storyline follows the leader of the team, Hondo Harrelson, who subsequently recruits Jim Street to join the elite unit based out of the LAPD after Street and his former partner were dismissed from the last team following a botched job.

Together, they aim to enlist even more members, forming a group of misfits including tough Deke Kay and single mother Chris Sanchez.

The team’s first major assignment is to escort a high-profile French crime boss to prison. While initially it may seem like a routine operation, things quickly become complicated when the criminal offers a massive cash reward of $100 million to anyone who can set him free.

All the most dubious characters and dangerous criminals of the LA underworld suddenly emerge to compete for the prize, putting the newly formed SWAT team to the ultimate test. They’ll have to navigate a gauntlet of the deadliest killers in town to complete their mission…including not only the resentful Gamble, but a traitor within their own ranks , reports the Mirror.

The film features a cast ensemble who, at the time, were not particularly well known on the big screen. However, years later they are now some of the most recognisable faces in Hollywood having starred in massive blockbuster franchises from Marvel to Fast and the Furious.

This includes Samuel L Jackson, Colin Farrell, LL Cool J and Michelle Rodriguez. There’s also appearances from Octavia Spencer and Jeremy Renner.

It didn’t receive rave reviews from critics but it performed well at the box office raking in more than $200 million worldwide. It was enough to inspire the return of the franchise to television from 2017. Shemar Moore took over from Jackson in the role of Hondo and it lasted for eight seasons with a sequel spin-off set to be released later this year.

Film enthusiasts are still urged to witness where it all started. One fan went as far as to claim it is: “Probably one of the best action films you will ever see.”

While another added: “Terrific action movie from a cast of yet to be known Class A movie stars. Original, exciting, a believable storyline, twists and turns, this movie has it all. Five stars. Loved it!”

Another individual claimed: “5 out 5! One the best cops thrillers!” While one person posted: “SWAT is a slick and solid film that offers cool action and will entertain most.”

Even those who don’t regard the film quite so highly acknowledge it remains a ‘perfect popcorn movie’ and ‘brilliant old school action that’s very underrated!” One viewer appeared to enjoy it as they recognised it was “no doubt influenced by the Die Hard series.”

SWAT is streaming on Prime Video.
