The UK’s switchover from old-fashioned copper cables to full fibre connectivity continues to accelerate, with more homes now being moved to this faster and more reliable technology. Millions of UK postcodes already have access to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) cables, and now another 1.2 million properties are being added to the list. BT’s Openreach, which supplies telecoms infrastructure across Britain, has just announced 132 new locations where so called Stop Sell alerts are being triggered.

This warning tells providers who use Openreach services – such as Sky, BT, TalkTalk and Vodafone – that they will no longer be able to sell legacy analogue products in streets where full fibre is available.

This means new homes connecting to phone and broadband plans, along with those updating their existing contracts, will have to move to fibre broadband. Old landlines are also affected, with customers switched to something called Digital Voice instead. This uses the web to make calls to friends and family rather than those ageing cables that dangle above streets.

Although some have been concerned about moving away from copper, Digital Voice does offer better quality phone calls, along with new features such as spam call blocking, and call diverting to a mobile phone.

Openreach has also confirmed that customers not yet able to get ultrafast Full Fibre at their premises won’t be impacted, and can stay on their existing copper-based service until Full Fibre does become available.

Speaking about the latest update James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Director, said: “Our stop sell programme is a vital step in accelerating the UK’s transition to a modern full fibre future. As copper’s ability to support modern communications declines, the immediate focus is getting people onto newer, future proofed technologies.”

“By phasing out legacy copper-based services in areas where fibre is now widely available, we’re ensuring customers and providers move onto faster, more reliable, digital infrastructure. This approach not only reduces the cost and complexity of having to maintain both old and new networks but also supports the industry-wide migration ahead of the legacy copper-based Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) now just over 12-months away, by which time everyone will need a digital phone line.”
