Netflix fans hail thriller a ‘masterpiece’ after new trailer | Films | Entertainment
Netflix has just unveiled the official full-length trailer for an upcoming film starring huge Hollywood names, including Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. The crime thriller, which is just one of many 2026 films, follows a team of Miami cops who discover millions of dollars in a derelict stash house.
Upon the discovery, trust amongst the group starts to fray and as outside forces learn about what has happened, there are doubts over who can be relied upon. Matt Damon said of the film: “In Miami, you have to count the money on-site, so that everybody knows how much is there.
“They know that it’s almost certainly cartel money that belongs to very dangerous people who are probably going to come get it. They’re on the clock, and they have to start thinking of defending where they are because they can’t just leave.”
The film in question is The Rip, which will be released globally on Netflix on January 16. Ben Affleck further explained the premise, adding: “It begs the question: What do you do when faced with this massive temptation? What does that mean? What’s it like to see that up close? And then also, who do you trust?”
The official trailer garnered thousands of views just minutes after it dropped, with fans flocking to the comments to share their first impressions.
@abhijeet_raj commented: “Ben Affleck x Matt Damon is MASTERPIECE.” While @brendenchee16 chimed in: “Name a more iconic duo…I’ll wait.” Further praising the cast, @TheRealJFranco shared: “Matt Damon and Ben Affleck together is always interesting. The cast lineup they got for this is really solid.”
@Rasim9898 commented: “It’s so nice to see Matt Damon and Ben Affleck again. This will be one of the best movies. As a big fan of their work, I’m very excited to see them.” @bigtable shared: “This is going to be insane.”
The trailer shows the group from Miami PD turning up at an abandoned house, where, during a search, they discover a huge amount of cash hidden in a bucket. Not wanting to draw attention to the “rip”, they each question what they would do with such an unbelievable amount of money.
Inspired by true events, Netflix has teased how each character’s morals are questioned as they consider stealing the cash for themselves. The trailer teases “trust has a price”, and who will pay?
The film also stars The Walking Dead legend Steven Yeun, along with Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Scott Adkins, Kyle Chandler, Néstor Carbonell and Lina Esco. The Rip was first announced in June 2024, with filming taking place in LA and New Jersey.
The first teaser for the film was released in September, with another sneak peek released on Christmas Day. Director Joe Carnahan previously spoke to Tudum about working with Affleck and Damon, who are also executive producers on the film, sharing: “Working with Matt and Ben and having two, distinctly talented filmmakers, as both creative allies and the studio heads, wound up being the best of both worlds.
“I’ve never had as easy an experience on a movie as I had on The Rip. They took exceptionally good care of me and backed my decisions every step of the way.”
Damon and Affleck met as neighbours in Massachusetts and quickly became close friends, going on to play lead roles alongside one another in a handful of films.
They can be seen together in Good Will Hunting, Dogma, The Last Duel and Air.
The Rip will be released globally on Netflix on January 16
