‘Must-see’ thriller fans ‘can’t look away from’ on Film 4 tonight | Films | Entertainment
A ‘chilling’ thriller that has viewers declaring it ‘really satisfying’ and ‘fantastic’ will be broadcast on Film4 tonight.
Released in 2022, The Menu is a thriller with a sharp edge of dark satire exploring class conflict and the pomposity of culinary culture. The cast features Ralph Fiennes and Anya Taylor-Joy alongside Nicholas Hoult and Hong Chau.
The plot follows Chef Julian Slowik (Ralph Fiennes) as he welcomes wealthy, privileged diners to his exclusive island eatery for a final feast that culminates in everyone’s demise. Each course reveals the guests’ shortcomings and duplicity, whilst Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy), an unexpected companion, survives by requesting a simple, delightful cheeseburger that rekindles the Chef’s passion for cooking and wins his admiration.
The screenplay drew inspiration from writer Will Tracy’s actual visit to an isolated Norwegian eatery, where he allegedly felt imprisoned by the ordeal.
The film has captivated audiences, with one viewer observing: “Really fun satisfying watching entitled rich people get their comeuppance from someone who got pushed way too far.”, reports the Mirror.
Another said: “The cast’s performances were good! Each delivered sharp, layered portrayals that perfectly matched the film’s darkly satirical tone. The story was gripping from start to finish, blending tension, mystery, and dark humor in a way that keeps you hooked. A clever and well-executed concept that serves up both thrills and social commentary, definitely a feast!
“Delightful commentary on society. There was not a single dull moment!” said a third. Another posted: “Fantastic movie. Although the ending was a bit predictable, the movie did a great job in portraying the insatiable satisfaction of the uppermost class.
“Part dark comedy, part social commentary. The Menu is a delightful surprise,” said another,.
One viewer praised it as they wrote: “Like a great steak, rare, a bit bloody, and to be savored.
“This movie has an atmosphere like no one else. In the end everything becomes a reflection of societal disorders and hits deep,” said another.
Another praised the satire as they wrote: “Hilarious! Horror, plus dark sarcastic comedy at its best. A must-see movie for anyone who’s ever had to suffer through a meal at one of those ridiculously high-priced, artsy-fartsy restaurants that serves overrated food in Lilliputian portions with stupid names.”
The sumptuous culinary backdrop featured dishes crafted by acclaimed French chef Dominique Crenn, who boasts three Michelin stars. He devised the elaborate, artistic cuisine whilst ensuring kitchen personnel executed genuine culinary methods during filming.
The production proved to be a commercial triumph upon its 2022 release, largely due to being shot on a modest £30 million budget before raking in $79.6 million globally.
