‘Must-see’ superhero film has ‘best origin story ever’ and is on ITV tonight | Films | Entertainment

Once a beloved superhero franchise, the series had lost its shine until a reboot emerged and has been hailed as the ‘best origin story ever’.

Batman Begins, based on the DC Comics character, was not the first or last film about the caped crusader, but its brilliance set it apart. The film boasts an all-star cast including Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne, alongside screen legends Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Katie Holmes, Gary Oldman, Cillian Murphy and Morgan Freeman.

The Batman saga had been put on hold following a previous film’s failure. However, Batman Begins revitalised the franchise with its darker, more serious tone, earning acclaim as one of the best origin stories.

The narrative delves into Bruce’s past, recounting his childhood fear of bats and the traumatic murder of his parents during a night at the opera in Gotham City. Left orphaned, young Bruce is cared for by the family’s loyal butler Alfred Pennyworth (Caine), a former serviceman who becomes his surrogate father.

Following his failure to avenge his parents’ deaths, Bruce embarks on a global journey honing his fighting abilities. His path leads him deep into the underworld where he crosses paths with questionable figures who ultimately shape his mission to rescue Gotham from its criminal element, reports the Mirror.

The narrative also reveals the genesis of his iconic suit and the batmobile, crafted in the caverns below Wayne Manor – marking the birth of his vigilante persona, Batman.

Under Christopher Nolan’s direction, expectations were modest given the disappointing reception of Batman and Robin in 1997. Yet its 2005 release defied predictions, earning widespread praise and box office triumph.

With worldwide takings of $373.4 million, it became the second most lucrative Batman picture until surpassed by its follow-ups, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.

Devotees of the Caped Crusader’s origins have voiced their approval on Rotten Tomatoes, awarding it an impressive 85% rating. One five-star reviewer said: “The best origin story movie of all time,” whilst another praised its fresh approach.

“A grounded, serious origin story that shows how Bruce becomes Batman, not just why. It’s realistic, emotional, and beautifully structured,” they wrote.

A third viewer also praised the fresh approach and celebrated the casting of Bale, who wasn’t a household name until securing the part.

“Brilliant! Christopher Nolan managed to color Batman a shade darker,” they said. “This might just be the definitive Batman movie. Christian Bale makes the perfect Batman. Stellar and very capable cast excels in character. Amazing cinematography and visually stunning. Very well written. Filled with action, intrigue, drama, suspense, twists and emotion. Must see.”

Another enthusiastic fan also awarded it full marks: “One of the best movies I have ever seen. I loved the cast, the story, the CGI, the bad guys, everything. I liked the suit, the story on how batman got his moves, the cast, the CGI, the Batmobile, the setting, the movie feeling, so on 5/5 stars, would absolutely recommend,” they said.

Batman Begins airs on ITV2 at 9pm tonight, Sunday 21 December.
