Upon its 1992 release, the film received considerable critical recognition, clinching the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay whilst earning nods for Best Picture, Best Director and additional categories.
A reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes, where the film boasts an impressive 95 per cent approval score, wrote: “This 1992 thriller follows a member of the IRA, who has a brief but meaningful encounter with a British soldier who is being held prisoner by the group, and later develops an unexpected romantic relationship with the soldier’s girlfriend”, reports the Mirror.
“A very original and though-provoking story that would end up getting the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, out of other 5 nominations.
“The gripping film captivates viewers throughout, and when its infamous ‘shocking’ twist arrives, it proves deeply compelling to witness the protagonist grappling between his desires and what his instincts compel him to do. Stephen Rea’s performance is impeccable and his nominations are thoroughly deserved.

“Whilst the film may have courted controversy upon its initial release or due to its depiction of a transgender character by modern standards, it has undeniably established itself as a significant piece of cinema that deserves to be watched and appreciated for its themes.”
Another review added: “It only took me almost three decades to get around to seeing this iconic film that took on so many controversial subjects and introduced some of our very best actors.
“After such a length of time, many films that were considered avant grade when they were made have become simple camp through changing times, but not this one! It’s still a stand out dramatic film!”.
“Good story with some plot twists. Well-acted,” said a third and another simply put: “In my opinion, this was the Best Picture of 1992..”
Another posted: “Wow, is this movie bonkers. The story in “The Crying Game” is just completely crazy, but the characters’ motivations come through so strongly that their choices feel believable.
“I am a big fan of the director, Neil Jordan, and he really nails it here. I do not understand why he doesn’t have more movie credits.
“Warning, this movie is for mature audiences only for heavy violence and nudity. I give it a B, next time you’re in the mood for a movie, this one won’t disappoint.”
The Crying Game airs on Tuesday 20 January on Film4 at 11.30pm.
