‘Most magical place ever’ that ‘rivals Thailand’ is 30C in January | Asia | Travel
Brits wanting to escape the dreary UK winter in favour of sunnier shores usually head to the likes of Bali or Thailand, but according to travel experts there’s one ‘underrated’ country that’s emerging as a strong rival thanks to its palm-fringed soft sand beaches and beautiful scenery.
Sri Lanka is by no means a hidden gem, but it has been enjoying somewhat of a popularity boost in recent months, with Travel Republic reporting a 72% surge of demand for holidays to the South Asian country in the last month alone. Over on social media, influencers have been sharing their experiences of travelling around the country, with fans quickly jumping in the comments and describing it as the “most magical place ever”.
With its picture-perfect beaches, lush green scenery and wildlife spanning everything from elephants to leopards, it’s not difficut to see why it’s such a hit with intrepid explorers.
The ancient citadel of Sigiriya, said by locals to have been built by King Kasyapa, makes for quite the spectacular landmark. Sihagiri, or the Lion Rock, takes its name from the enormous stone carved lion that forms the gateway into the breathtaking fortress. It’s a steep climb, but it’s well worth it for the spectacular views (just be mindful that it can get crowded, so get there early if you want to beat the rest of the tourists).
Meanwhile Udawalawe National Park offers up the idyllic setting for watching wild creatures on a safari from water buffalo and mongooses to jackals and spotted deers.
For those Maldives-rivalling beaches, Unwatuna Beach is one not to be missed as it boasts crystal clear waters that are ideal for swimming or watersports.
Then there are the breathtaking temples to be found nestled across the landscapes, but if you only visit one then you may want to make it the Temple of the Tooth. Nestled in the bustling city of Kandy, this World Heritage Site houses the relic of the tooth of Buddha; an important treasure as it’s believed that whoever holds the relic can govern the country. It is therefore no surprise that the tooth itself is locked away in a golden casket, away from prying eyes. Still, the temple complex has countless shrines and smaller temples to explore, and offers a fascinating glimpse into Sri Lankan culture.
One expert from Travel Republic added: “Sri Lanka is becoming one of Asia’s most exciting destinations. It offers stunning beaches, lush islands, rich local culture, and incredible wildlife, all without the crowds that have made other destinations feel overrun. For travellers seeking authenticity and adventure, it’s a destination that still feels fresh and undiscovered, much like Bali did two decades ago.”
Throw in the fact that temperatures can reach up to 30C in December and January, and the appeal is instantly obvious.
A word of caution however; if you’re going to visit during the winter months, head to the south and west coasts, where it’s dry season. The Northern parts of Sri Lanka will be facing their monsoon season which definitely will not offer the winter sun you may be seeking out!
The travel insider explained: “With Sri Lanka currently having its moment on social media, now is the perfect time to start planning a trip for 2026. The best time to visit the southwest coast and cultural triangle is from December to March, when conditions are warm and dry. For the east coast, including Arugam Bay, April to September offers ideal weather for surfing and beach activities.”
