A ‘dazzling’ adaptation that viewers confessed required an immediate second viewing has arrived on Netflix.

The Life of Chuck landed on the streaming giant’s vast catalogue today (January 5). Based on Stephen King’s novella of the same title, it has been brought to the screen by Mike Flanagan.

For those new to their collaborations, Life of Chuck marks a departure from the horror-heavy repertoire typically associated with the pair.

This offering leans towards science fiction and distinctively unfolds its narrative in reverse chronological order.

The synopsis reveals that the story traces Charles “Chuck” Krantz through various life stages, exploring themes of love, loss and the complexities within us all.

Tom Hiddleston headlines the cast as Chuck, supported by a stellar ensemble including Karen Gillan, Jacob Tremblay, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Mark Hamill amongst others.

Flanagan has previously adapted King’s works in Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game, whilst also developing Carrie for television and crafting Netflix series such as The Haunting of Hill House, reports the Mirror.

Yet early viewers of the 2024 release have highlighted its marked tonal shift. Rather than relying on terror and shocks, audiences describe Life of Chuck as uplifting and life-affirming.

The film boasts an impressive 80% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside an even stronger 88% audience score. Its arrival on Netflix means a broader viewership can now discover this acclaimed title.

Devotees of the film have revealed they felt compelled to watch it immediately again to fully grasp the intricate narrative devices employed throughout.
