‘Masterpiece’ Western comedy that’s the ‘best-kept secret’ now streaming on ITV | Films | Entertainment

A classic film from the 1960s is getting fresh attention after becoming available to stream on ITVx, and viewers say it is one of the funniest Westerns ever made. The movie has plenty of cowboy action, as well as big comedic moments, and fans say it remains just as entertaining today as it was when it first came out.

For some, it is the perfect example of how Westerns can be light-hearted without losing the charm of the genre. Others say it is one of those titles people forget about, only to realise later they have been missing a gem. And with its return to streaming, many are calling it the “best-kept secret” now available to watch for free.

The film also stars two of Hollywood’s biggest names of its era, whose chemistry is often credited as the reason the comedy works so well.

The Western in question is McLintock! and those who have already seen it were full of praise.

One person said: “This is John Wayne’s best comedic role by far. This movie is just hilarious and sets the tone for other western comedies of the 1960s and 70s.”

Another added: “It’s an excellent Western and somewhat of a best-kept secret. Many people have forgotten about it over the years but it delivers in so many different ways.

“The key actors were outstanding and the story line was warm and wonderful. If you like a good western mixed with comedy, then don’t miss this movie.”

A third wrote: “It’s really hard to put into words how much I love this movie. It’s funny, tells a great story and moves along nicely.

“Maureen O’Hara plays perfectly off of John Wayne. It’s a Western masterpiece and I really couldn’t find anything wrong with the movie whatsoever.”

Someone else commented: “I recommend this movie to everyone, I don’t care if they aren’t a fan of westerns or John Wayne.

“It’s my favourite comedy western of all time. A classic western I tip my hat too. This film was really a masterpiece because of the chemistry and comedic timing of the entire cast.

“If you’re a John Wayne fan, and have not seen this film, then what are you waiting for, go watch McLintock! You will be glad you did. It’s an outstanding and fun film.”

Originally released in 1963, the movie stars John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara and was loosely inspired by The Taming of the Shrew.

It was filmed in Technicolor, set against stunning American landscapes and packed with a large supporting cast including Patrick Wayne, Stefanie Powers and Chill Wills.

The film has since entered the public domain in the US, which is one reason it appears on so many streaming platforms.

It’s available to stream free of charge on ITVx right now.
