‘Masterpiece’ fantasy better than Stranger Things streaming | Films | Entertainment
Fans of Stranger Things are being urged to watch a fantasy film based on a book which stars some huge names like Emily in Paris star Lily Collins (who dated a Stranger Things star), Lena Headey, Aidan Turner and Jamie Campbell Bower.
The 2013 film is based on the first book of The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare and it follows a teenager from New York who meets a group of mysterious beings known as Shadowhunters.
The film is a journey of self-discovery as Clary Fray (played by Lily Collins), explores her own heritage and family history. Since Stranger Things has now come to an end after a controversial season five finale, fans may be keen to discover more of Vecna star Jamie Campbell Bower’s work.
With some fans criticising the ending of Stranger Things, they may get more enjoyment out of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, which is available to watch on Plex, and can be rented on Prime Video. Campbell Bower stars as Jace Herondale, a Shadowhunter living at the New York Institute with his adopted family, the Lightwoods.
His character is described as being sarcastic and cold, but this facade only acts as a mask hiding his tortured and angry soul, much like his Vecna role in Stranger Things. While the film did not go down particularly well with critics, viewers at home hailed it “perfect”, taking to IMDb reviews to share their thoughts.
Rozzielara commented: “The movie to me and my family was so amazing!! We all enjoyed it, I still watch it, I never get tired of watching it. Even though they made a series of it in Shadowhunters, it’s still not the same. To me, the TV show just doesn’t cut it because I am in love with the actors of the movie. Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower are Clary and Jace to me all the way!”
Suprise-16693 added: “I love this movie. I can watch it over and over again. The story and the characters are so good. I’ve read all the books and I don’t mind that they don’t follow the storyline. The movie is still great.
“The actors play the characters so well. Jamie Campbell Bower plays Jace so good, he’s really like the Jace in the books. He is perfect for the role.”
Skpn123 shared: “I cannot fathom all the criticism of this film. The actors are beautiful and touching and connected in their characterisation. It is worth watching the movie just to see their faces that are sensitive to every nuance of the interactions.
“Each scene is carefully crafted and is a masterpiece. The lead actors Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower are a work of art.”
Hollie-winbush concluded: “The atmosphere they created for this film was unlike anything I’ve ever encountered. Considering it was quite a mainstream film, the shots, music and sets all made it seem indie and independent. The cast for this film was also PERFECT.
“There isn’t one member of the cast that was wrong for their part or let the rest of them down. However Jamie Campbell Bower was definitely the highlight, he was a perfect Jace.”
Campbell Bower was expected to return alongside Collins for a sequel film, but the idea was shelved to make way for the Shadowhunters TV series, which had a different cast.
Author Clare’s The Mortal Instruments series is made up of six young adult fantasy novels following Clary and the Shadowhunters, who are tasked with protecting the world from dark forces.
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is available to watch on Plex, and can be rented on Prime Video
