A much-loved drama described by viewers as “one of the greatest ever made” is about to disappear from Netflix. The film has been widely praised for its emotional impact and powerful message. It has also developed a loyal following over the decades and remains one of the most talked-about titles in its genre.

It has also earned a reputation for being one of the most inspiring classroom-based stories ever put on screen. Reviewers say the film’s message still resonates today, and many consider it one of the finest dramas of its era. With Netflix confirming its removal in early February, viewers have been revisiting it in large numbers.

The title leaving the service on February 3, 2026, is Dead Poets Society.

The film has extremely strong ratings, with a 92% audience score and an 85% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. 

Fans have repeatedly described it in remarkable terms. Released in 1989 and directed by Peter Weir, the film stars Robin Williams as an English teacher at the fictional Welton Academy in 1959. 

It tells the story of his unconventional teaching methods and their effect on a group of students. 

The film became a major box-office success, earning more than $235 million worldwide, and went on to win several major awards, including the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

It also received Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Williams. 

Over time it has gained an even stronger following, with its “Carpe Diem” message becoming one of cinema’s most famous quotes.

The film’s legacy grew further after Williams’ death in 2014, when fans and teachers around the world shared tributes inspired by the final classroom scene.
