‘Masterpiece’ drama on Netflix is Tarantino’s ‘best film’ | Films | Entertainment
“This just might be Tarantino’s masterpiece,” declares one critic, and for all intents and purposes, it really might just be.
This 2019 period comedy-drama has been hailed one of iconic filmmaker Quentin Tarantino’s best directorials to date, and it’s not hard to see why.
Written and helmed by Tarantino, the film is a co-production between the United Kingdom, United States, and China, and those hoping to catch it on streaming don’t have a lot of time left.
Fans only have a few days to catch the film, as Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood is departing from Netflix’s loaded roster on January 7.
Tarantino’s magnum opus features a star-studded cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Al Pacino, Austin Butler, Dakota Fanning, Margaret Qualley, Emile Hirsch, Kurt Russell, and Timothy Olyphant. It’s also Luke Perry’s last film appearance, released posthumously after his tragic death.
The official synopsis of the film reads: “Actor Rick Dalton gained fame and fortune by starring in a 1950s television Western, but is now struggling to find meaningful work in a Hollywood that he doesn’t recognize anymore. He spends most of his time drinking and palling around with Cliff Booth, his easygoing best friend and longtime stunt double. Rick also happens to live next door to Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate — the filmmaker and budding actress whose futures will forever be altered by members of the Manson Family.”
With an 86 per cent critics approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood garnered positive reviews and proved to be a commercial success, grossing over $377 million at the global box office against a $90 million production budget.
Critics were impressed with the film, with one writing: “While Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is different to anything that Tarantino has ever done before this movie can be summed up in one word – a masterpiece”
Another reviewer felt it was Tarantino’s best movie to date: “It’s a movie full of surprises, none bigger than this – I kinda love it. And let me get this out of the way – I think it’s Tarantino’s best film.”
While one critic compared it to the legendary Pulp Fiction: “It is Tarantino’s best, bravest and most confrontationally impudent movie since Pulp Fiction.”
Audiences were equally impressed with Tarantino’s offering as one wrote: “Tarantino has mastered masterpieces! The way he takes this movie through the genre of westerns is incredible. Paying homage while adding his trademark style to this instant classic is definitely worth this movie’s run time. This man has perfected perfection!”
While another happy fan said: “I love Tarantino movies, and this is a love letter to Hollywood. Everything is perfect – soundtrack, cast, the retro look of the late 60’s and especially the cinematography. This movie has humor, drama, and action.”
Yet another impressed viewer felt transported to the 60s while watching the film: “I loved how parts of this movie were based on true events, and it really felt like our era’s actors went back in time to experience those moments. That’s what makes it special—it’s not just acting, it’s like living in that era.”
While one fan said of the ‘exceptional’ film: “One of Hollywood’s most tragic and disturbing stories, reimagined through Tarantino’s unmistakable mastery and visionary touch in writing and directing. Anchored by exceptional performances that leave no room for improvement, it carries the aura of a bygone era with unmatched grace. A masterful love letter to Hollywood’s Golden Age.”
Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood will depart from Netflix on January 7.
