A “masterpiece” biopic that fans can’t stop watching is streaming for free in the UK. Elvis (2022) depicts the rise of American pop icon Elvis Presley (played by Austin Butler), widely hailed as a trailblazing force in the popularisation of rock and roll music. Butler transforms into the Memphis native for the role as he shocks and electrifies audiences at his early shows in the mid-1950s.
The buzz around him catches the attention of mysterious impresario Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks), who masterminds his journey to superstardom. But as Elvis’ fame and wealth grow, cracks begin to appear behind the scenes. The movie was directed by Baz Luhrmann (The Great Gatsby, Moulin Rouge), who co-wrote the screenplay alongside Sam Bromell, Craig Pearce, and Jeremy Doner.
Fans flocked to Rotten Tomatoes to shower the film with praise, with one fan writing: “If you’re an Elvis fan, you should really see this movie. It’s not a documentary and there is definitely some dramatic license taken but it is a great movie!”
Another wrote: “Hands down my favourite movie! An absolute masterpiece, Ive literally seen it 10 times. If youre contemplating watching it at all, dont think about it, just go.”
A third said they “freaking love this movie”, had seen it “probably 20 times” and will “see it again as well”.
A fourth said: “I liked the accuracy of the film. This was the fourth time I saw it and I still cried at the end. If someone asked me to go see it tomorrow I would go again!”
A fifth said: “Great movie. I am not a fan per se, but I recognize his influence. Great film. I really enjoyed how they connected events in his life and used the Colonel as the narrator.
“Way to go Tom Hanks! Way to go actor who played Elvis! Awesome..”
A sixth called it an “absolutely remarkable moving movie”. “Austin Butler nailed the role to the last detail. So good!” they said, calling it a “must see”.
The film has a 12 certificate and contains drug misuse, discrimination, sex references, injury detail, and strong language – so viewer discretion is advised.
Elvis is streaming now on BBC iPlayer.
