It’s been showered with five star reviews calling it “masterpiece”, as Oscars buzz claim it’s a shoo-in for Best Picture and Best Actor.
Yet, Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another starring Leonardo DiCaprio has ended up a box office bomb.
The Warner Bros action thriller has taken $142 million at the box office, which is impressive haul for an original R-rated flick that’s almost three hours long.
However, the Hollywood movie’s budget was $130 million with $70 million spent on marketing.
Taking into account that cinemas share 50% of the ticket sales, plus Leo’s percentage of the box office and the studio is looking at a $100 million loss.
According to Variety, Warner Bros is set to begin a multi-million dollar Oscar campaign despite this. The estimated $100 million loss is according to “to studio executives with knowledge of the economics of similar-sized films”. While a Warner Bros spokesperson “pushed back on those estimates while noting the company has enjoyed a successful year at the box office with hits like Sinners and A Minecraft Movie.”
