Amazon’s Kindle e-reader range provides an excellent E Ink reading experience no matter which model you go for, but the devices aren’t exactly cheap. The Kindle Paperwhite model is the sweet spot of the line up, offering an excellent display with frontlight, premium build and weeks-long battery life.

But at at least £159.99, it’s relatively pricey. Luckily, we’ve spotted a deal on the latest Kindle Paperwhite that could save you a chunk of change if you need to upgrade your Kindle or are looking to invest in your first e-reader.

Right now, Amazon is selling the Kindle Paperwhite for £114.99 in what is listed as a ‘Limited time deal’. The usual price for this Kindle is £143.99

The reason this device is a little cheaper, apart from it being on sale, is because it is a ‘Certified Refurbished’ Kindle. That means the device you buy is pre-owned.

“Each pre-owned device goes through a full diagnostic test, thorough cleaning and inspection, secure data wipe, and replacement of any defective parts identified in testing (where applicable),” Amazon says.

Given this is the latest generation of Paperwhite released in 2024, it’s likely that these refurbished models are simply devices that have been returned for a refund within Amazon’s 30-day return window. That means you could well end up with a Kindle with no signs of wear, though Amazon does not promise this.

What it does guarantee is a fully working, clean Kindle Paperwhite ready to use.

I’ve tested this version of the Paperwhite, and found it a great Kindle to read on. The screen is flush with the bezel, unlike on the cheaper regular Kindle, which looks and feels better in your hand. It’s a Kindle light enough to hold with one hand too, and the touchscreen is very responsive for quickly turning pages. In fact, Amazon says it’s the fastest Kindle to date in this respect. I’ve found it very zippy indeed.

That screen is also glare-free thanks to a matte finish, while a single charge can last up to 12 weeks, particularly if you put it in airplane mode. Connecting to Wi-Fi is necessary to buy or download new books, but constant connection will use a little more juice.

A great upgrade over the cheaper Kindle is the Paperwhite’s adjustable display that lets you turn it from white amber so you can comfortably read in the dark without glaring light.

However, this Paperwhite does not have an automatic light sensor in it, nor does it have wireless charging. Those features are reserved for the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition.

It’s also worth noting this cheaper Paperwhite comes with lockscreen ads. This is a little irritating, but it won’t get in the way at all when you’re reading a book.

As this is a limited time deal, we don’t know how long the £114.99 price will last, so if you are mulling a new Kindle this could be the time to take the plunge.
