Is Ser Duncan the Tall related to Brienne of Tarth? | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is captivating audiences after recently hitting TV screens on HBO and NOW.
The six-part epic, comedy-drama, which serves as the second spin-off series to Game of Thrones, follows the adventure of wandering hedge knight Ser Duncan ‘Dunk’ the Tall (played by Peter Calffey) and stable boy Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), alongside a large ensemble cast.
The show is adapted from George R.R. Martin’s novellas collectively known as the Tales of Dunk and Egg, however, many Game of Thrones fans are curious to know about the connections between A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and its parent series, including a subtle dig in episode one.
Many viewers have been questioning the link between Dunk and Game of Thrones favourite Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie). Here’s the lowdown on whether the two are related.
Yes, Ser Duncan the Tall and Brienne of Tarth are indeed related as confirmed by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin back in 2016 during the fan convention BaltiCon in Baltimore.
The American author was asked by one fan if readers would ever discover how Brienne was descended from Dunk, to which Martin answered: “Eventually. All will be revealed in time.”
However, beyond saying that Dunk is an ancestor of Brienne, there’s not been much more information about the connection between the two.
Prior to this confirmation, there had been fan theories of Dunk and Brienne being related thanks to clues left by Martin in A Feast for Crows.
In the fourth Game of Thrones novel, Brienne recalled finding an old shield bearing Dunk’s sigil in her father’s armoury at Evenfall Hall, which hinted at a connection between the two.
Brienne also had Dunk’s sigil painted on her own shield at Duskendale in A Feast for Crows, again linking the two.
Moreover, Martin has previously described both in a similar way, given their shared immense stature, build, sense of loyalty and honour, as well as their quest to be noble knights and serve the realm.
Dunk is considered to be one of the greatest knights in Westerosi history and Brienne is embarking on a similar mission, showing off her swordsmanship at numerous times during Game of Thrones.
Dunk also got an honourable mention in Game of Thrones when Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson) was looking through a book about the history of the Kingsguard and remarked: “Ser Duncan the Tall. Four pages for Ser Duncan. He must have been quite a man.”
Martin previously said that Dunk has several descendants in Game of Thrones, but has yet to confirm who these are.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms airs on HBO on Sundays in the USA and on Mondays on NOW in the UK
