Inside the destiny of The Witcher’s Nimue | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from The Witcher season 4 and the novels by Andrzej Sapkowski

The fourth series of The Witcher has recently arrived on Netflix, with fans eagerly devouring all eight new episodes, reports the Mirror.

Liam Hemsworth steps into the role of Geralt of Rivia, taking over from Henry Cavill who left after the first three series, alongside other fresh faces in the cast.

In this series, Geralt (Hemsworth) and Yennefer of Vengerberg (portrayed by Anya Chalotra) are on a desperate quest to find Ciri (Freya Allan).

Interestingly, this series employs a narrative device where the stories of Yennefer, Ciri and Geralt are recounted to a group of children a century later.

Among these children is a girl named Nimue (Eve Ridley), who is captivated by the tale and yearns to discover more.

By the series finale, an older Nimue (Sha Dessi) believes her fate is intertwined with Ciri’s, even indicating a picture of herself standing next to her in one of the books.

Furthermore, Nimue declares she will be heading to Aretuza to gain more knowledge about the mages and Ciri.

Who is Nimue in The Witcher?

Just like in the TV adaptation, Nimue grows up hearing tales of Ciri, Geralt and Yennefer’s lives a hundred years prior and becomes enamoured with them.

She undergoes training to become a mage and completes her education by the age of 18, learning more about Ciri and the others.

In Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher novels, Nimue aids Ciri in reaching Strygga Castle, where Vilgefortz (Mahesh Jadu) has Yenn captive.

Ciri discovers her ability to time travel and traverse different worlds, but struggles to control this power.

Unexpectedly, Ciri stumbles upon Nimue by a lake during one of her time travels.

Before they can converse, Ciri disappears, having unintentionally interrupted Nimue in a private moment.

Following this fleeting encounter, Nimue realises that Ciri cannot harness her power alone.

Under Nimue’s guidance, Ciri finally arrives at Strygga Castle, where both Yenn and Geralt are engaged in a battle against Vilgefortz.

For those curious about the character’s name, Nimue shares it with the Lady of the Lake from Arthurian legend.

Sapkowski has previously expressed his fondness for incorporating elements of myths and fairy tales into his work.

In the original material, the framing device was only introduced in the final novel, The Lady of the Lake, but it appears the showrunners have decided to introduce it earlier in the series.

Given that the fourth and fifth seasons were filmed consecutively, they are expected to transition smoothly from one to the other.

Speaking about the framing device in season four and the recasting of Geralt, The Witcher’s showrunner Lauren Hissrich told TV Line: “We wanted to play with the idea, which is a huge theme in The Witcher, of how stories change depending on who is telling them.

“So obviously that opening sequence is played and there’s a device, and you sense that, oh, maybe everything that we’ve seen over the last three seasons has been through someone’s POV. Maybe that’s not actually how it happened.”

Hissrich added: “We constantly love to be playing with the idea of narrative with our audience.”
