Idris Elba spotted filming scenes for Luther sequel | Films | Entertainment
Hollywood star Idris Elba has been spotted filming scenes for the forthcoming sequel to Luther: The Fallen Sun in London.
The 53 year old British sensation was noticed by fans, who promptly posted videos on TikTok of the star in action, reports the Mirror.
In the brief clips, Elba was seen sprinting along a road and past a Hamptons estate agents in Canary Wharf, presumably as DCI John Luther in fervent pursuit of a suspect in the Netflix movie.
The camera and crew were visible in the video as artificial rain machines showered water from above.
The video was filmed yesterday (March 16) in the afternoon, according to the TikTok user uktravel.
The video was captioned: “Idris Elba spotted filming scenes for the Luther sequel for Netflix in Canary Wharf, London.
“The entire area was transformed into a film set, and the crew even created fake rain to shoot one of the scenes, making London appear even more dramatic on camera.
“I even spotted his stunt double rehearsing the scene first before Idris Elba stepped in to film. Always thrilling to randomly stumble upon a movie set in London #canarywharf #london #idriselba #movieset.”
It seemed there were also numerous extras with umbrellas as the relentless detective was on the case.
At one point, it appeared as though Elba was preparing to dash through the rain again for another take.
In true British fashion, many commented under the TikTok video about the weather: “Why would u need fake rain in England ? ? [sic].”
A second individual commented: “it belted it down with real rain at 4pm” and a third chimed in: “You mean it wasn’t actually raining , makes a change.”
A fourth person remarked: “We all love Idris, don’t worry I’m in Mallorca Spain and it hasn’t stopped raining for 5 days and freezing cold and windy, it’s actually colder than London. enjoy the shoot [sic].”
These scenes follow Netflix’s confirmation last year that Elba would be reprising his role as the iconic London detective, renowned for his David Bowie fandom and sharp yet unconventional investigative skills.
Joining Elba, Ruth Wilson from The Affair will return to her role as the cunning murderer and psychopathic genius Alice Morgan, whilst Dermot Crowley reprises his role as Martin Schenk.
Luther’s creator Neil Cross told Netflix’s Tudum: “Luther, Alice, and Schenk are more than characters to me – they’re family.
“I never stop wondering where they are, what’s become of them … and what horrors might be stirring in the shadows of London while Luther’s not around. So we decided to get together and find out what happens next.”
A teaser summary from Netflix states: “When a wave of brutal, seemingly random murders hits London, Luther is secretly called back into service. But how can he save London when everyone on all sides seems to want him dead?”.
Director Jamie Payne is set to return to the franchise and commended writer Cross: “Neil has yet again created a wonderfully dark tale to bring us all back together. It’s a true joy to be back on the streets of Lutherland with the supreme talents that are Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley.
“I am also thrilled to be reunited with the brilliant and dangerous Alice Morgan, played by the extraordinarily talented Ruth Wilson. Fans new and old are in for a treat!”.
The currently untitled Luther film will act as a sequel to the initial movie, 2023’s Luther: The Fallen Sun.
The forthcoming Luther film is currently in production, with no release date confirmed at present.
This development follows Elba receiving his knighthood from King Charles III, meaning he is now known as Sir Idris Elba. The honour was bestowed in acknowledgement of his contributions to the film, television and entertainment sectors.
