I’m old enough to remember a time when portable TVs were either so tiny they were almost unwatchable or so heavy they weren’t really portable at all. There was also the joy of spending hours trying to get the built-in aerial in just the right place so you could actually see the on-screen action rather than a fuzzy picture. Luckily, television technology has advanced significantly since the 80s, and it’s now possible to binge on pin-sharp boxsets in any room without even needing a power cable or access to an aerial socket.

I’ve been testing out Samsung’s new MovingStyle TV with an in-built battery and neat carry handle, which makes it simple to transport all around the home.

That convenient handle even converts into a kick stand so you can use this screen pretty much anywhere – even outside.

With the battery fully charged, you’ll get around three hours of playback, which is easily enough to watch a Hollywood blockbuster or binge on a few box sets.

Once your screen time is done, the TV clips neatly and seamlessly back onto its supplied charging stand for a refill.

This really is the ultimate gogglebox for anyone looking for a uniquely portable way to tune in to movies, sports and entertainment.

The stand even has wheels so it can be whizzed around rooms and its mechanical arm can be moved in numerous directions, tilted or twisted into a portrait orientation so you get the perfect viewing angle.

As you’d expect, the MovingStyle is fully internet-connected and offers instant access to all the most popular streaming apps such as Netflix, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, ITVX and Apple TV.

It can be turned into an interactive piece of art via Samsung’s Art Store, offers full gaming capabilities and includes Samsung’s Daily Board widgets with weather and the day’s diary appearing on the screen.

It ships with a solar-powered remote, so there’s no need for annoying batteries, and you may find you don’t even need that channel changer, as the display is touch-sensitive, so it can be used like a giant iPad.

I’ve really enjoyed using this TV. It’s fun, super versatile and a break from the norm over most tellies I’ve tested. However, it’s definitely not perfect.

The 27-inch QHD 120Hz display can look washed out at times and lacks the punch of other displays made by Samsung. You need to be seated as centrally as possible to get the best experience, as it has quite a low viewing angle threshold.

Sound is just about OK, but not earth-shattering, and although I like the solar remote, it doesn’t feel very premium in the hand.

The stand also makes it look a little like you are in a hospital ward, and the base is ludicrously heavy.

That means it’s not easy to move the entire system up a flight of stairs.

Although the Movingstyle can be used outside, it’s not waterproof, so don’t forget to bring it in before heading to bed, and the brighter you pump up the screen, the less battery life you’ll get.

Finally, there’s the cost.

The Movingstyle is priced at a whopping £1,199.

For that money, you can get a seriously impressive (albeit non-portable) TV that will offer far better visuals and audio.

The Movingstyle is not a bad product. In fact, it’s a very nice television that offers something completely different.

It’s a niche device, but if you want a screen that’s super simple to move around and even use outside, then it’s hard to fault.

The design makes it really easy to manoeuvre, there’s access to endless hours of content via streaming services, the battery life is good, and the touchscreen makes it feel more interactive.

Taking TVs on the move finally means far fewer compromises. Just be aware that you will pay a premium for this more mobile form of entertainment.
