‘History-making’ romcom is still fans’ comfort movie after 11 years | Films | Entertainment

A ‘life changing’ romantic comedy that fans return to annually is marking its 11th anniversary today – and you can watch it right now on Disney+.

Love, Rosie initially arrived in cinemas on October 22, 2014 and has remained a favourite amongst romance enthusiasts for more than ten years.

Adapted from Irish writer Cecelia Ahern’s 2004 book ‘Where Rainbows End’, the tale chronicles childhood companions Alex and Rosie.

Having been friends since just five years old, the pair grow up inseparable.

However, they become separated when Alex relocates to America to study at Harvard, whilst Rosie stays in their hometown and faces her own milestones, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Whilst attempting to maintain their friendship, the two gradually acknowledge their romantic feelings for each other.

Although it delivers all the elements of an uplifting romantic comedy, this film also explores weighty subjects including abortion, teenage pregnancy and bereavement.

Romance veteran Sam Claflin portrays Alex, alongside Emmy-nominated Lily Collins as his romantic partner. The cast also features popstar Suki Waterhouse, Kidulthood actress Jaime Winstone and Keeping mum star Tamsin Egerton.

German director Christian Ditter helmed the production, whilst Juliette Towhidi penned the screenplay.

As the film reached this significant anniversary, cinema enthusiasts have flocked to X, previously known as Twitter, to mark the occasion.

One admirer declared: “Love, Rosie isn’t just a movie. It’s a feeling that stays with you for years.” Reflecting on the film’s impact, another viewer stated: “Lives were changed, the world shifted, history was made.”

While someone else wrote: “Time for my annual rewatch,” while others labelled the film as their “comfort movie”.

Despite its popularity among regular cinema-goers, Love, Rosie didn’t fare well with critics. The film received a disappointing 32 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The critics’ consensus reads: “Lily Collins and Sam Claflin are appealing, and they give it their all, but they’re undone by Love, Rosie’s silly, clichéd storyline.”
