Fitbit was acquired by Google in 2021 but if you owned a Fitbit before that date, there’s a chance you may still be using your device, and the Fitbit smartphone app for iPhone or Android, signed in with a Fitbit account.

Since 2023, Google has required people using Fitbit for the first time to sign up to the service using their Google account, killing off the old Fitbit account system.

Google has been warning Fitbit users still signed in with their old Fitbit account they will need to migrate their data over to an active Google account or otherwise lose their historic Fitbit data. For some users, this could mean more than a decade of health and fitness data.

The deadline for this migration was previously today, February 2, 2026, but as spotted by 9to5Google, the deadline has been changed to May 19, 2026, giving holdouts even longer to make the switch.

“After May 19, 2026, you can no longer access Fitbit with your Fitbit account,” Google said on an updated support page. “To continue using your account, you’ll need to move your Fitbit account to Google.”

“You can still download or delete your data any time before we begin processing data deletions on July 15, 2026.”

This gives you the option to download your data for browsing in raw file format on your PC, or to delete your data entirely so that Google will no longer be storing it on its servers.

Fitbit is now a Google service, the same as Gmail, Google Drive or YouTube, so the firm wants you to move your data, if you want to, over to your Google account so you don’t lose it all. The tech giant has not said why it has moved the deadline – in fact, the old February deadline was also one that had been moved later than the original time.

Either Google is having issues, or it can see that scores of Fitbit fans haven’t yet migrated, and wants to give them more time. These holdouts are probably long-time users of the Fitbit platform, and therefore could be users Google does not want to annoy by automatically deleting their data.

But the reality is, your Fitbit data was signed over to Google on the day in 2021 the merger was completed. Just because you are signed in with a Fitbit account rather than a Google account, it doesn’t make your personal data any less in the hands of the big G.

If you miss the new deadline, or don’t want to move your old Fitbit data over, your data will be deleted from the aforementioned July date. You’ll only be able to use your Fitbit tracker or the Fitbit app after that by logging in with a Google account – but your data will be gone if you don’t migrate it before May 16.
