Fans of period dramas can’t afford to miss out on this Shakespeare adaptation of one of the Bard’s best-loved plays that’s now streaming on Prime Video.
This comes after others have enjoyed a “masterpiece” historical drama, a murder mystery series from an acclaimed author, and a period crime drama.
The film was released in 1995 and took its cue from a haunting tale, with many praising the piece on IMDb. One user gave a glowing 10/10 review and described the play as their “favourite” Shakespeare story because it was so “fascinating” and hailed this adaptation as “absolutely brilliant”.
They went on to say how the central leads “just capture the story so well and understood its darkness”. The reviewer concluded: “This is a terrific movie, great acting, good sets, and good direction, this is what Shakespeare meant when he wrote the story.”
A second person described the piece as “beautifully crafted film” and praised the actor portraying the villain for humanising the loathed figure. They explained: “[T]hat’s when the audience knows something extraordinary has happened on stage or screen. See this film.”

A third person gave 9/10 and declared it to be “excellent” and “very recommendable”, saying it was a “very well made film” featuring “beautiful locations and cinematography”.
They added: “The dialogue is wonderful as you would expect, it is not always the Shakespearean language but it is still intelligent and thought-provoking with a lot of complexity.”
The film Othello came out in 1995 and served up a breathtaking retelling of Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy.
The period drama told a complex tale of jealousy, lies and betrayal, charting the downfall of title character Othello (played by Laurence Fishburne).
Othello was convinced by his trusted friend Iago (Kenneth Branagh) of his wife Desdemona’s (Irène Jacob) infidelity, leading to heartbreak.
Iago spun a web of lies due to his deep envy of Othello’s prosperous life as he sought to destroy him.
He also wanted to ruin the life of Othello’s friend Cassio (Nathaniel Parker) and take his lieutenancy in the process.

Along with Fishburne, Branagh and Jacob, Othello also starred Notes on a Scandal star Michael Maloney, The Count of Monte Cristo’s Nicholas Farrell, Interview with the Vampire’s Indra Ové, and Michael Sheen from Good Omens.
The film was directed by Oliver Parker, who was also behind The Importance of Being Earnest, Dad’s Army (2016), and Funny Woman.
The 1995 version was just one of a long line of adaptations of Othello.
Other screen versions include the 2001 teen film O starring Mekhi Phifer, Julia Stiles and Josh Hartnett in the main roles and the story set in a contemporary elite boarding school.
Another adaptation was an ITV film from legendary screenwriter Andrew Davies from the same year. This time, the action was set in the Metropolitan Police Force with Eamonn Walker, Christopher Eccleston and Keeley Hawes taking on the lead roles.
Othello (1995) is streaming on Prime Video for a fee
