Europe’s snowiest ski resort has £26 flights from UK and cosy chalets | Europe | Travel
Anyone booking ski holidays will know there are some key factors for a great getaway; soft, abundant snow, beautiful views, and a bustling après-ski scene, whether that’s for a mulled wine or a hearty cheese fondue.
Luckily there’s one gorgeous resort that not only ticks all of those boxes, but it’s also a budget-friendly option for Brits; not to mention its weather conditions are so good in winter that the insiders at Jet2 have described it as “one of the most snow-sure resorts in Europe”.
Tignes in France is hardly a hidden gem, attracting thousands of ski fans from around the globe every winter, but with climate change meaning that the windows for snow-capped mountains and powdery slopes are getting shorter, it’s worth having on your radar.
Sitting at over 2,000m high, the resort in the French Alps is made up of five villages, all of which sit on the doorstep of some gorgeous mountain runs. In fact, the area is popular with skiers of all abilities, whether you’re a complete beginner, or you’re someone for whom black runs with moguls are a thrilling new challenge (meanwhile Tignes Snowpark is fan with freestyle fans wanting to really put their skills to the test). Add in the cosy alpine chalets, the plethora of bars and the countless restaurants, and it’s not difficult to see why it’s such a hit.
Most recently the team at airport transfers firm Hoppa named it Europe’s snowiest resort, tipping it as a must-visit for the upcoming season. Their researchers explained: “Tignes tops the ranking as Europe’s snowiest resort. Each year, Tignes gets an average of 669cm of snow, more than any other European ski resort. In the best of years, Tignes will receive over 10 metres of snowfall, meaning you can easily ski until the beginning of May. Tignes has heavy snowfall because it is one of the highest resorts in Europe, with the highest point of the area reaching an altitude of 3,456 meters.”
Tignes also took the third spot in the brand’s overall rankings of Europe’s best ski resorts, which included considering factors such as lift pass costs, ski transfers, accessibility and nightlife options.
You won’t need to break the bank to get their either. There are a host of airports less than a three-hour flight away including Grenoble, Geneva and Lyon, and plenty of airlines offering direct flights including easyJet, Jet2, Wizz Air and Ryanair. When we took a look on Skyscanner, we could find one-way fares from £24 in January and £26 in February, although it’s worth noting this won’t include any extra luggage costs, not to mention you’ll need to pay extra if you want to take your own ski or snowboard gear with you.
