Emma Raducanu has revealed that Francisco Roig was the one who ended their coaching relationship, not her. The British No. 1 hired Roig, one of Rafael Nadal’s former coaches, last summer, but they parted ways after the Australian Open in January. While in Melbourne, Raducanu admitted there was a misalignment between how she was playing and how she wanted to be playing. So when she announced her amicable split with Roig, it didn’t come as a huge surprise.
However, the world No. 24 has now confirmed that Roig initiated the mutual split, agreeing that things were no longer working out. Raducanu is now without a full-time coach, but doesn’t seem keen to hire a replacement. The Brit is travelling with hitting partner Alexis Canter and physiotherapist Emma Stewart, and has enlisted the help of old mentor Mark Petchey while in Indian Wells.
Ahead of her opening match in the Californian desert, Raducanu spilled the details on her split from Roig, telling Sky Sports: “After Australia, me and Francis were talking. We have a great relationship, we could have a really open and honest conversation. He ended up saying, ‘Look, I don’t think this is going in the way we both want it to’, so he ended it really.”
While Raducanu is enjoying an informal link-up with Petchey, Roig also appears to have moved on and has been spotted working with French ATP star Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in Indian Wells. But they’re still on good terms.
“In a way, I think we had a few moments where we weren’t agreeing on a few things. Other than that we still maintain a great relationship and I’ve seen him here, it’s been great to a see a familiar, great face around,” Raducanu added.
Raducanu is seeded 25th in Indian Wells and got a bye directly into the second round, where she faces qualifier Anastasia Zakharova. And the 23-year-old is already feeling better after spending a few days working with Petchey, who is juggling his broadcasting duties for Tennis Channel.
She continued: “Mark was going to be here anyway for commentating and I’ve been working with Alexis who has been helping me so much. With Mark I knew he’d be in Indian Wells so I asked him to come out a few days earlier just to do some stuff with me on the court and try to feel back in a better way with my game.

“At the start of the year I didn’t feel too good but the last few days I’ve been feeling better. It’s not something that has really been organised going forward but I knew he would be here and it’s been great, I always love being on court with him.”
The British No. 1 has made it clear that she’s in no rush to hire a new, full-time coach. Raducanu’s coaching carousel has been a hot topic over the last five years – she’s had nine different coaches in that time, depending on who and how you count – and she knows there will be extra noise, no matter who she hires.
“It is a challenge because I think it affects some of the decisions I make. I don’t want to start working with anyone not knowing if it’s going to be 100 per cent set in stone, because I feel like regardless of how or why it ends it will be put on me, even if I didn’t end it with Francis,” Raducanu explained.
“It does affect at some points but I know at the end of the day I need to take the decision that’s going to make me the best player. By having the experience of spending too long doing something I’m not comfortable doing, it’s only affected me and made me feel worse about my tennis. Having gone through that, I don’t want to because I know how it makes me feel on the court.”
