British Gas urges customers to cook and charge devices in these hours | Personal Finance | Finance

British Gas customers are being urged to cook and charge devices during a two-hour window this Friday to cut their energy costs by 50%.

The major energy supplier is giving its PeakSave customers half price electricity between 11am and 1pm on Friday, December 19, as part of a Green Flex event that allows households to save money. The event comes thanks to windy conditions which has resulted in more renewable energy being available and customers can take advantage of half-price electricity during this two-hour period to tackle everyday tasks. British gas says the event presents the ideal opportunity to cook and charge devices between 11am and 1pm, or to carry out other energy guzzling tasks, like running the dishwasher or vacuuming.

Customers who are eligible to take part will receive an email from British Gas ahead of the event and can choose whether or not to opt in.

The discount is available to both new and existing PeakSave customers and all savings will appear as credit on customers’ energy bills.

British Gas said: “Customers can take advantage of half-price electricity hours to tackle everyday tasks – such as preparing lunch and charging devices, as well as starting preparation for the festivities next week!

British Gas has installed over 1.2 million smart meters this year- more than any other energy supplier – meaning more customers can benefit from smart tariffs, lower bills and support a greener future.

“PeakSave Green Flex events allow customers to benefit from half-price electricity during two-hour windows when it is very sunny or windy and there is lots of renewable energy available. Eligible customers will be emailed to opt in and take part.

“British Gas uses its own forecasting to set the events to test the potential savings and impact on the grid with this scheme. The discount is available to new and existing PeakSave customers, and all savings will appear as a credit on customers’ energy bills.”

Green Flex events come in addition to the supplier’s usual PeakSave Sunday scheme which offers new and existing customers with a smart meter half price electricity every Sunday between 11am and 4pm on any of their tariffs.

This scheme is open to all customers – no matter what tariff you’re on – and by joining you’ll get 50% cheaper electricity every Sunday between these five hours.

So if you miss the Green Flex event this Friday, you’ll have another chance to save money on Sunday, December 21, during a five-hour window from 11am to 4pm. The Sunday events don’t require opting in as costumes will automatically be included every week after signing up to PeakSave.

British Gas tends to run two to three PeakSave Green Flex events per month, each lasting two hours, so customers can expect more opportunities to save money in December.

The supplier added: “There is no obligation to change your normal routine, although the more you can shift regular activities such as washing, cleaning or cooking, the more you could save on your energy bills, whilst helping the planet.

“All PeakSave customers will continue to get half-price electricity every Sunday without needing to opt in. PeakSave was launched to reward customers for better energy usage, supporting a greener energy supply.

“So far, British Gas has paid over £30 million to over 1 million customers taking part in the scheme. British Gas customers can find out more, including how to take part, here.”
