Brand new Game of Thrones video game coming soon from HBO | Gaming | Entertainment
A brand new game based on HBO’s House of the Dragon series is coming soon, although it might not be the open world RPG you were hoping it might be.
Announced via a blog post on the Warner Bros Discovery site, Game of Thrones: Dragonfire is a free-to-play mobile game coming soon to iOS and Android devices. It’s in development at Warner Bros Games Boston, which is the same team that worked on Lord of the Rings Online as well as Batman Arkham Underworld.
The press release reads: “Developed by Warner Bros. Games Boston, Game of Thrones: Dragonfire brings the studio’s proven expertise to a modern, approachable social strategy experience where tactical warfare, territorial expansion and the unrivaled power of dragons combine to redefine how players battle for control of the Seven Kingdoms.
“Drawing inspiration from events portrayed in “House of the Dragon,” players will experience a new narrative as a Valyrian descendant tasked with hatching, raising and flying dragons. Fans will encounter both familiar faces and original characters, form alliances and factions with other players, as well as engage in tactical battles to become a true dragonrider and dominant force in Westeros.”
A teaser trailer for Game of Thrones: Dragonfire was released on YouTube via IGN. While it doesn’t show any gameplay just yet, it provides a shiny-looking glimpse at related cinematics, including the likeness of Emma D’Arcy’s Rhaenyra Targaryen.
While the likes of Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter appear to be getting fully-fledged AAA game treatment, Game of Thrones is still lagging behind in this regard. Last year saw the release of Game of Thrones: Kingsroad, but its mobile approach to game design earned it a lacklustre response from fans on Steam.
The only other major Game of Thrones title in recent years was the Telltale game from 2014, which followed a narrative thread that ran alongside Season 3, 4 and 5 of HBO’s hit TV series.
However, Game of Thrones fans remain hungry for some big-budget video game treatment. While Dragonfire might scratch the itch for mobile gamers, those on consoles are forced to remain patient for a while longer.
Mobile gamers can pre-register for Game of Thrones: Dragonfire right now. Doing so will earn players exclusive rewards once the game launches properly.
There’s currently no word on an official release date.
