A big update to the Fitbit app and experience has been teased for months by Google and has been partially available for months to US users on Android. That period of exclusivity is now over, as Google has announced that its personal health coach, an AI-powered major overhaul of the Fitbit app, is coming to the UK.

In an blog post, Google said the personal health coach is now available to Fitbit Premium subscribers in the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore, expanding beyond the US for the first time.

The firm also said that for the first time, the update will be available in public preview for anyone with a Fitbit Premium subscription and an iPhone, in all mentioned countries. In the UK, Fitbit Premium costs £7.99 per month and unlocks all paywalled features within the app, including coaching videos and deeper data analysis.

Fitbit Premium users with Android phones have been able to get their hands on the all-new Fitbit app since November, but UK users have had to wait until now to be able to access personal health coach, which uses Google Gemini AI tools to make Fitbit’s recommendations and observations even more personal.

Fitbit trackers and Pixel Watch smartwatches have been very popular over the years because of the health and fitness insights they give, but this is mostly based on the user looking at raw data and drawing conclusions themselves.

Competitors such as the Whoop band and Oura Ring have popped up lately with AI-driven advice that takes the data and turns it into actionable insights and suggestions, which is what Google aims to do with Fitbit’s personal health coach update for the Fitbit app.

In the below unlisted YouTube video, Google goes through how to use the newly revamped Fitbit app.

“Your personal health coach built with Gemini is your personalized fitness trainer, sleep expert, and health & wellness advisor, using your data to create custom workout plans, analyze your sleep patterns, and answer your health questions,” Google says in the video’s description.

Despite the overhaul, it’s notable that Google is rolling out this big update in slow, controlled stages. Although the Android version appears to be out of preview, the iOS version is still opt-in, and Google has been asking for a lot of user feedback and even has a dedicated Fitbit community forum page for people to raise issues.

If you think you are eligible for the Fitbit update, it will work on any modern Android phone or iPhone with the latest version of the Fitbit app. However, not all Fitbit devices will work with personal health coach. Here is the full list of Fitbit and Pixel Watch devices that are compatible:

  • Fitbit Inspire 2
  • Fitbit Inspire 3
  • Fitbit Luxe
  • Fitbit Sense
  • Fitbit Sense 2
  • Fitbit Versa 2
  • Fitbit Versa 3
  • Fitbit Versa 4
  • Fitbit Charge 5
  • Fitbit Charge 6
  • Pixel Watch 1
  • Pixel Watch 2
  • Pixel Watch 3
  • Pixel Watch 4

The Versa 2 came out way back in 2019, but given how long Fitbits last for, you might be disappointed to find your tracker won’t work with the flashy new app update, even if you use Fitbit Premium. For example, the Charge 4 is not on the list, and that tracker came out in 2020.

I am rooting for the Fitbit brand, as it’s one I have a soft spot for, even if it was predictably gobbled up by a tech giant.

Google has confirmed there are plans for new Fitbit hardware in 2026, too. Along with this big app update, the future is looking a little brighter for the brand.
