BA launches new route to beach destination dubbed ‘cheap Croatia’ | Europe | Travel

British Airways (BA) has announced a new route that’ll connect passengers with a little-known European destination this summer.

From May 14 2026, holidaymakers will be able to fly from London Heathrow to Tivat in Montenegro, a stunningly beautiful area of Adriatic coastline with mountain views. While Montenegro has seen its tourism numbers increase slightly in recent years, it welcomed about 2.6 million visitors in 2024; it’s still much less visited than neighbouring Croatia, which gets around 21 million tourists a year.

According to Numbeo, who compare the costs of living in different countries, Montenegro is between 20-30% cheaper than Croatia. For example, a meal for two at a restaurant could cost €60 in Croatia versus €45 in Montenegro, and a pint is about a Euro cheaper too, at around €2.50.

Staying in Tivat gives you access to a number of beautiful beaches, from sandy to wild, pebbly spots. Plavi Horizonti is one of the most popular beaches, offering a sandy bay and clear, calm seas for swimming. It’s surrounded by lush greenery and rocky landscapes for a natural look. Families love this beach because of the shallow waters, perfect for snorkelling, and there are sunbeds to hire.

Belane Beach is pebbly, but this doesn’t deter visitors as it has the most beautiful, clear turquoise seas. It’s a popular spot due to its proximity to the city, and close to restaurants and cafes. If you’re looking for a lively, party vibe, head to Oblatno Beach, which is home to a beach club and has day beds for hire. By day, it’s chilled, and as the sun goes down, there are DJ sets, cocktails, and parties that go on until the small hours.

Tivat is a charming coastal town that has palm-tree lined streets and red roofed houses giving it classic Mediterranean vibes. It’s home to Porto Montenegro, a stylish marina where you’ll see shiny yachts coming in to the dock. The area has a wide choice of restaurants, including stylish waterfront eateries, and as well as designer boutiques and jewellery shops.

While Tivat is fairly modern, you can take a short taxi ride or bus to Kotor, which has an old town area. Known as Stari Grad, this historic area is set within medieval walls and has labyrinthine stone streets that are fascinating to explore. It has a range of architectural styles, most prominent of which are its Venetian buildings, which have ornate stone carvings.

Head in-land to explore some of Montenegro’s spectacular and unspoilt lake and mountain scenery. The nearby Vrmac Ridge offers a range of hikes for different ability levels, and gives you incredible views across the serene Bay of Kotor. You can even take a longer hike from Tivat to Kotor which takes four to five hours, but is worth it for the discoveries along the way such as WWI military fortifications.

BA flights to Tivat will depart from London Heathrow Terminal 3 three times a week and are available to book now from £172 return per person,  including taxes and carrier fees.
