Amazon confirms refund for UK customers as product ‘discontinued’ this month
Anyone who purchased a clever accessory for their Fire TV Stick will be getting an instant refund in the coming weeks. Amazon just announced the news after deciding to end the life of one of its products, the Fire TV Blaster. This gadget, which links to Fire TV Sticks and Echo speakers to make homes feel smart, will officially stop working “in the coming weeks,” according to the online retail giant.
When it launched, the idea behind the Fire TV Blaster was to enable hands-free voice control for home entertainment systems when paired with a Fire TV Stick or an Echo smart speaker.
Once set up, users could use Alexa commands to turn soundbars on or off, adjust volume levels, and change channels on set-top boxes.
It sounded like a good idea. However, the device was pulled from sale around a year ago following a wave of negative feedback, largely due to its complex setup process. Amazon later introduced the Fire TV Cube, which delivers similar functionality but is far easier to use. This made the Blaster feel even less relevant and owners have now been informed that the device will soon be rendered unusable.
To soften the blow, Amazon is offering a refund in the UK with a gift card for the full amount of the Fire TV Blaster – £34.99 – being automatically applied to customer accounts. Amazon says the refund should appear within 24 hours, and no action is required to get the money.
Those in the US are being offered a discount on the Fire TV Cube instead.
“We’re emailing because you purchased a Fire TV Blaster — an accessory for hands-free control of soundbars and TVs when combined with a Fire TV Stick and Echo device,” an email shared by AFTVnews explains.
“In the coming weeks, support for the Fire TV Blaster will be discontinued, and the device will stop working.”
In addition to the refund, Amazon has confirmed it will recycle old Fire TV Blasters free of charge. Customers simply need to print a prepaid shipping label and return the device.
