Amazon has announced the actor for Kratos in its upcoming TV show adaptation of God of War, and it’s a familiar face for those who’ve played the game… well, voice.

Kratos will be embodied by Ryan Hurst, who actually featured in God of War Ragnarok as Thor – one of the game’s main bosses throughout its runtime.

Hurst earned a BAFTA nomination for his work in Ragnarok, but he’s also well known for other live action roles, too. Key pieces of Hurts’s work include Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead.

Amazon Prime made the announcement on X, with its post reading: “Meet Ryan Hurst, your Kratos in the God of War series coming to Prime Video.”

Sony Santa Monica Studios, the developers behind the God of War games, said: “Congratulations to Ryan Hurst who will be stepping into the role of Kratos for the upcoming God of War live action series!

“We’re excited to see his take on Kratos as he joins the legendary ranks of T.C. Carson and Christopher Judge who have each shaped this character in unforgettable ways.”

Meanwhile, Christopher Judge himself had his own congratulations to pass on. “Congrats Ryan!!!!  You’re gonna be great… BOI!!!,” he wrote on X.

Not much is known about the upcoming show, although a summary of the plot sounds like it’ll be following the 2018 game’s story pretty accurately. It reads:

“God of War follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”

The first two episodes will be directed by Frederick E.O. Toye, who’s known for his work on The Boys, Shōgun, and most recently the Fallout adaptation.

There’s currently no word on when the first season is set to air, but we imagine it will still be a while away yet as principal photography has not yet started. Despite this, Amazon has already greenlit a second season of the show, indicating it has some confidence in its chops.

We also don’t know who will be joining Hurst in the cast. Fan casts have suggested the likes of Iain Armitage from Young Sheldon, or even Finn Wolfhard from Stranger Things.

However, some fans of the game are keen to see the game’s actor for Atreus appear on screen. Sunny Suljic has previously appeared in movies before, and his appearance is strikingly close to that of Atreus’ design in the games.

That said, Amazon is keeping its lips pursed on further casting details for now.
