Netflix has announced it’s transforming a beloved series of novels into a period drama for modern audiences. This follows anticipation for another period drama touted as superior to Bridgerton, whilst viewers have also devoured a gangster drama praised as among the finest TV shows, and enjoyed a gripping BBC thriller, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The upcoming period drama from Netflix will draw from a collection of bestselling novels that have captivated readers for years and garnered exceptional reviews on Amazon Books.

One reader penned an enthusiastic five-star review of the first instalment: “This was a amazing little book to read I really enjoyed this book it was interesting to think about and got my daughter thinking too! [sic].”

Another reader shared in their top-rated review: “I loved these books as a child and bought the series to share with my grandchildren, only to discover that I loved them even more as an adult. I really enjoyed all of the practical details and read in a few weeks the whole series beginning to end.”

A third reviewer awarded five stars, describing it as “an old favourite” whilst explaining: “I read this as a little girl, and now I’m loving sharing it with my children. These are beautifully written books, with the original illustrations.”

The iconic American novel, Little House on the Prairie, is set to be reimagined by Netflix, with the streaming giant confirming that work has begun on a fresh adaptation. Netflix offered a sneak peek from the table read of the upcoming production, which is slated for release later this year.

The series will draw inspiration from Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House books, set in the 1800s.

Wilder’s semi-autobiographical novels depict her experiences growing up in the challenging environment of the American West. Written during the Great Depression and published in the 1930s, these stories are now being reinterpreted by Netflix.

Following the tremendous success of Anne With an E, expectations are high for Little House on the Prairie to captivate audiences in a similar fashion.

According to Netflix’s Tudum, the series will be: “A transformed adaptation of Wilder’s semi-autobiographical books, the new Little House on the Prairie is part family drama, part epic survival tale, and part origin story of the American West. The series will offer a kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier.”

The forthcoming series features Lessons in Chemistry’s Alice Halsey stepping into the shoes of Laura Ingalls, the protagonist of Little House on the Prairie. Luke Bracey, known for his roles in Hacksaw Ridge and Little Fires Everywhere, will portray Laura’s father Charles Ingalls, while Palm Royale’s Crosby Fitzgerald and child actor Skywalker Hughes have been cast as Laura’s mother Caroline Ingalls and older sister Mary Ingalls respectively.

New Amsterdam’s Jocko Sims is set to play Dr. George Tann, with Warren Christie of The Watchful Eye fame starring as Civil War veteran John Edwards. Meegwun Fairbrother from Avatar: The Last Airbender will take on the role of farmer Mitchell, and Alyssa Wapanatǎhk, known for Peter Pan and Wendy, will portray Mitchell’s wife White Sun.

Echo’s Wren Zhawenim Gotts will play Good Eagle, the daughter of White Sun and Mitchell, and Xander Cole stars as Little Puma, White Sun’s younger brother.

The ensemble cast also includes Riverdale’s Ryan Robbins as Russell Kind, Station 19’s Barrett Doss as Emily Henderson, Mary Holland as Jemma James, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Michael Hough as Eli James, Kowen Cadorath as Caleb, Thosh Collins as Louis, Maclean Fish as Adam Scott, and Rebecca Amzallag as Lacey Aubert.

The show is currently being filmed in Canada and is set to hit our screens in 2026. The Netflix adaptation follows a highly successful version that aired from 1974 to 1983, featuring stars such as Michael Landon, Karen Grassle, Melissa Gilbert, Melissa Sue Anderson, and Dean Butler.

The series has maintained its status as a heartwarming family favourite, boasting a 7.5/10 rating on IMDb.

Rebecca Sonnenshine, known for her work on The Vampire Diaries and The Boys, is the showrunner for Little House on the Prairie and shared her thoughts on adapting Wilder’s novels. She expressed: “I fell deeply in love with these books when I was 5 years old. They inspired me to become a writer and a filmmaker, and I am honored and thrilled to be adapting these stories for a new audience [sic].”

Little House on the Prairie will be released on Netflix in 2026
