A film dubbed ‘the worst movie ever’ is airing on Film4 this evening, featuring Matt Damon and Pedro Pascal in leading roles.
Released in 2016, The Great Wall follows European soldiers of fortune William (Matt Damon) and Tovar (Pedro Pascal) as they hunt for black powder in Song Dynasty China, only to find themselves detained at the Great Wall by the Nameless Order, a clandestine military force battling extraterrestrial creatures known as Taotie.
The pair become embroiled in the conflict, with William’s journey taking him from mercenary opportunist to valiant defender as he embraces Chinese principles and aids in vanquishing the monstrous invasion using a unique magnetic projectile to eliminate the queen beast.
Running for one hour and 44 minutes, the picture has divided opinion, with Rotten Tomatoes reflecting both admirers and detractors of the production.
One viewer said: “This is a cool action film about good vs evil and the consequences of greed and I throughly enjoyed it.”

Another added: “This movie is extremely over hated, its full of action and thrilling moments and has amazing production value. Many reviews say it doesn’t make sense however the plot and development are perfectly cohesive.”
A further review encouraged audiences to disregard any negative feedback, saying: “It’s a really entertaining movie for a Friday night – don’t listen to the posh critics. Sure, the script isn’t Oscar-worthy, but you get exactly what you expect: a fun, PG-13 ride with Matt Damon. Perfect if you just want to lay back, relax, and enjoy a bucket of buttery popcorn while watching thousand of Chinese Shi warriors kick ass..”, reports the Mirror.
Someone else shared: “I don’t know why the reviews are so bad, honestly. It was better than I expected it to be, although some of the strategies didn’t make sense, and a few of the acting moments felt a little forced…It was overall decent for its genre. I was expecting a slow build up to how the characters meet, but this movie is showing action from scene one, and it doesn’t really let up.”
A third viewer added: “Not a really strong plot, but the story worked and so did the cast! It made for a fantastic afternoon with drinks and snacks,

“I loved this movie. The acting was great. The actions was fantastic and the concept was fantastic. All of the critics didn’t like it but it was so much better than a lot of movies that come out today. Too bad it took me 8 years before I discovered it. I think me listening to silly critics is one reason I never watched it. I recommend this movie,” said another.
Yet not everyone was won over, with some viewers finding it tedious and even labelling it ‘cringe’.
One disgruntled viewer wrote: “This is to this date the worst movie I’ve watched. The story is extremely wacky to begin with but feels even more ridiculous when it’s packaged with such a prominent cast and huge budget.
“Incredibly, the story manages to be both strange and unoriginal at the same time, being basically just common movie tropes stacked on top of each other until the runtime is reached.
“I don’t mind a movie being trashy but when it’s trying that hard to be epic and cool without self-awareness, it’s just cringe. The silver lining is that it is excellent material to rant about.”
The Great Wall airs on Friday 16 January on Film 4 at 9pm.
