Sky and Freeview rival offers UK homes more TV channels to watch for for free
Freely has already made a big impression on the UK TV market, with over a million homes switching to this relatively new way of streaming live and on-demand content. Since it launched back in 2024, its channel list has continued to grow with over 50 live and free services available to view without the need for an aerial. Now there’s another boost coming, which will offer even more things to view.
Freely has confirmed it is bringing extra entertainment into homes with the launch of its new Freely Spotlight Channels. These will be available at no cost to the user and all streamed via a simple Wi-Fi connection.
Freely says its Spotlight Channels will be available on channel 31, along with channels 90 through to 99, with channel placement offered to CTV OS partners on Freely-enabled devices.
V (formerly VIDAA), the company behind the VIDAA OS smart TV operating system powering Hisense TVs, has been confirmed as the launch partner and will be the first to bring a curated selection of channels from their line-up to the Freely TV Guide.
It’s been confirmed that Freely Spotlight Channels will sit alongside existing high-quality and familiar UK broadcasters within the Freely TV guide, giving selected channels greater prominence and credibility within a regulated TV environment in the UK.
There’s no word on what content will be available via these new channels, but more news on what to watch will be announced closer to launch.
Deep Halder, Chief Commercial Officer, Everyone TV, said: “As Freely continues to scale, we are focused on building a platform that delivers long-term value across the whole ecosystem.
“Enabling CTV OS partner participation in defined parts of the TV guide allows us to deliver unprecedented value to our CTV OS partners in new ways, while staying true to our commitment to UK audiences to ensure free, trusted TV remains easy to discover in the streaming age.
“As our first partner at Freely’s launch two years ago, it feels fitting that V is leading the way as our Spotlight Channels launch partner, with their new channels featuring prominently within the TV Guide.”
What is Freely and how do you get it?
Freely is actually run by the same team behind Freeview and Freesat. The main difference for Freely users is that all content is beamed to screens via a broadband connection. That means there’s no need for an aerial, dish or tricky installation. To tune in, homes simply need a compatible TV or set-top box along with a decent Wi-Fi connection.
Freely includes over 50 live channels along with access to on-demand content. There are also TV recommendations, a full guide and the ability to pause live TV.
