Iran has warned Donald Trump’s ceasefire deal could go up in flames after giving a Washington an ultimatum that no peace talks will succeed while Israel continues fighting with terrorists in Lebanon. Despite a cessation of hostilities being announced by Trump at the 11th-hour of his own ultimatum last night, fighting has continued to rage across the region today (Wednesday).

The Israel Defence Force (IDF) carried out a number of airstrikes against Iranian proxy terrorist forces in Lebanon killing at least 112 people, according to the Lebanese health ministry. The latest count for Wednesday includes widespread strikes across central Beirut that came without warning, also wounding at least 837, one of the deadliest days in this latest war between Israel and the Hezbollah militant group. More than 1,500 people have been killed in Lebanon during the past month, and over 1 million others have been displaced.

And Trump’s ceasefire appears to be in the brink of collapse after Iran launched a series of “blatant” missile and drone attacks on Gulf neighbours. The US President had last night boasted there was no question the US had won a “total and complete victory” in the war against the Islamic Republic which America launched alongside Israel on February 28.

But posting on X Islamic Republic Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi condemnded the ongoing fighting between Israel and Iranian-backed Hezbollah forces in Lebanon. He said any peace negotiations hinged on the fighting stopping, adding: “The Iran–US Ceasefire terms are clear and explicit: the US must choose—ceasefire or continued war via Israel. It cannot have both.

“The world sees the massacres in Lebanon. The ball is in the US court, and the world is watching whether it will act on its commitments.”

Meanwhile, US media reported Vice President JD Vance, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner will fly to Islamabad, in Pakistan, to begin peace talks on Saturday.

Trump and Washington had come under mounting pressure after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz by threatening to attack shipping. The vital waterway usually carries around 20% of the world’s oil and gas supplies. The White House had said the ceasefire would open the strait but it appears so far shipping has not returned to normal and drone and missile srtrikes have continued from Iran on neighbouring countries.

A statement from the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Defence said: “The Ministry of Defence announces that the blatant Iranian attacks since the ceasefire took effect have reached 17 ballistic missiles and 35 drones, and the air defenses have successfully dealt with them.”
