A “masterpiece” drama starring Liam Neeson is streaming now on Netflix. In the Land of Saints and Sinners (2024) is a gritty revenge story set in 1974 during The Troubles.

The Netflix synopsis reads: “A disillusioned hitman comes out of retirement for one last job when an IRA bomber on the run from the law arrives in his sleepy Irish village.”

Neeson plays Finbar Murphy, the reluctant assassin, who is trying to live a quiet life in Donegal but is pulled back into a world of violence when his community comes under threat. Neeson stars alongside Oscar nominee Kerry Condon, Jack Gleeson, Colm Meaney and Ciarán Hinds. It was directed by Robert Lorenz from a screenplay by Mark Michael McNally and Terry Loane.

Fans flocked have flocked to review-aggregator platforms to lavish praise upon the drama, which some described as an Irish Western.

One fan writing on IMDb said: “Despite its brevity, I found myself thoroughly enjoying every moment of the film. The inclusion of beautiful classic cars added an extra layer of charm to the overall aesthetic. Additionally, the portrayal of different climates and weather in the movie added a visually striking element to the storytelling.

“I couldn’t help but wonder if the filmmaker behind this masterpiece would one day be recognised with an Oscar for their exceptional work.”

Another said the film is “beautiful”, writing: “The performances were great, especially from Neeson and Condon, but the scenery and the beautiful cinematography is what really stole the show for me.

“It’s simply breathtaking. The story is also enjoyable, being easy to follow, and I think some of the aspects or moments will stay with me. All in all, an absolutely amazing film.”

Another fan, writing on Rotten Tomatoes, said the thriller flick surprised them, writing: “I wasn’t expecting much from this…. but it’s MUCH more than a typical Neeson action flick… the characters and their drives and interactions are amazing. Best movie by Neeson for years.”

Another gave it five stars, calling it a “little gem”. “Very high quality cast, Neeson is cast perfectly as the old hitman,” they added. “The story makes sense. The script is calm and well written. The acting is on point across the board.”

Not everyone was blown away by it, with one writing: “5 stars for the gorgeous photography and the beautiful symphonic score. I always enjoy Liam Neeson but Kerry Condon is the real star here. The problem with the story is her screen time and story arc are underdeveloped.

“Likewise the other minor characters are just sort of there without contributing much. It’s a moody period piece but as a drama it is somewhat lackluster. Still worth watching.”

Others suggested it was a familiar role for Neeson, who has become closely associated with revenge-driven thrillers.

However, one fan said while you “get what you expect usually with Liam Neeson films” the movie is a “bit different”. “I really enjoyed it and recommend for an easy, entertaining watch,” they added.

It has a strong 83% on the site’s Tomatometer, which reflects the percentage of approved critics who have given it a positive review, with a decent 74% score among general audiences.

The film has a 15 certificate and contains injury detail, language, and violence – so viewer discretion is advised.
