Netflix confirms exact date it will stop working on 1 device millions still use | Gaming | Entertainment
Streaming giant Netflix has announced it will be discontinuing its service on one device this year. Users are being warned they have just weeks left of being able to stream entertainment on their device.
Users attempting to launch the Netflix app on the device are encountering error messages. It marks the end of years of support for Netflix, which initially launched back on the games console in 2009. However, gamers are unlikely to be too worried given the age of the sytem.
Fortunately, PS5 and PS4 users are safe from the move, which only affects PlayStation 3 systems. Those still watching programmes and movies through Netflix on their PS3 are now seeing a stark warning message about the impending change.
It brings to a close 17 years of Netflix availability on PS3. The streaming service initially debuted on the console in 2009 through a Blu-ray disc offering instant streaming capabilities.
Twelve months later, a dedicated app was introduced on PS3 to enhance accessibility. At present, Netflix users can view content in HD through PS3.
According to the Netflix website, PS3 and PS4 systems are able to “stream TV shows and movies up to 1080p”. The Netflix support adds: “Titles with an HD symbol will stream in high definition if your internet connection supports 5 megabits per second or more.”
Meanwhile, PS4 Pro and PS5 systems support streaming up to 4K Ultra HD and include HDR functionality. Netflix notes: “Titles with an Ultra HD symbol will stream in ultra high definition if your internet connection supports 25 megabits per second or more.”
The notification PS3 users are now seeing states: “Unfortunately, Netflix will no longer be available on this device after March 2, 2026. Visit netflix.com/compatibledeives to see a list of supported devices.”
Netflix’s move to discontinue PS3 support shouldn’t come as a major surprise, considering the console debuted nearly two decades ago. Sony launched the system in November 2006 in the United States and March 2007 across Europe.
Reddit users seem largely unsurprised by the announcement. Reactions from commenters have been varied, with one describing it as “tragic”. One user remarked: “I’m actually impressed it was still supported.
“I would have thought they dropped the ps3 years ago.” Another questioned: “I wonder if the Xbox 360 will be unsupported soon? I hope not, I use it all the time!”
A third user pointed out a distinctive benefit of accessing Netflix through the console, noting: “PS3’s Netflix allowed password sharing. That’s the only reason I used it. Every other device in my house doesn’t allow it. This totally sucks.”
