If you are constantly losing your keys and own an iPhone, then an AirTag is a must-have accessory. These diddy disc-shaped trackers first launched back in 2021 and have become hugely popular as they show precisely where things are via an interactive map. Once you get close, exact directions appear on the iPhone’s screen to point you in the right direction, and the AirTag can emit a sound, making it even easier to find. There was very little wrong with the original AirTag, but Apple has now launched an even better version.

This next-generation tracker now features improved range thanks to the latest Ultra Wideband chip. Apple says this will boost the all-important Precision Finding to help users get to their lost items from up to 50 percent farther away than the previous generation. Another bonus is that, for the first time, users can use that Precision Finding feature on some of the latest Apple Watch models. So AirTags can then be found using the screen strapped to wrists.

When the new AirTag is nearby, it can also make a much louder noise, with Apple promising that an updated internal design makes things 50 percent louder than before. So, if it falls behind the comfy cushions on the sofa, there should be no issue locating it.

One big bonus of all AirTags is their ability to link to any Apple device to send location updates to the owner. Now this feature has been changed from the ground up to keep personal data more private and secure.

Apple is keen to point out that the new AirTag doesn’t physically store location data or history on the device, and end-to-end encryption protects all communication with the Find My network, ensuring that only the owner of a device can access its location.

Finally, the new AirTag integrates seamlessly with Share Item Location, an iOS feature designed to help users recover a misplaced item by temporarily and securely sharing its location with trusted third parties, such as airlines, so they can assist in recovering delayed luggage or other lost items.

Apple has partnered directly with more than 50 airlines to privately and securely accept Share Item Location links.

The new AirTag is available to order on apple.com/uk and in the Apple Store app today, and will be available at Apple Store locations later this week.
